: Info Request: Durable, pump friendly 327
68Nomad Jun 6th, 03, 1:38 AM graemlins/waving.gif Well What do you all think i would need, i've got the little bugger chugging away in the nomad and she needs a rebuild within the next 2k miles. Whaddaya think? Well, i think, (but want more opinions) I'm gonna go .30 over if possible and throw some pro-topline heads upon it, but i wanna know if you fellas (and ladies albeit to a lesser extent) Have any suggestions? intake cc's? cam (Hyd/sld/rlr)? pistons? intake? carb (though i plan on keeping the QJ) ? also i would like to be able to slap a Holley Stealth Ram on in '04 unless something better takes it's place in my plans. Oh!, if you all DD2K whatever you suggest (not a request mind you) but IF you do so, please also recommend Gears and stall to. (current set is 3.36 dogleg) Sorry to be so long winded but well, there. i'm done.
DJS
P.S. CA = Crappy 91 Octane Premium, and Primarily a Street config, though there will be a trip or 3 out to infineon.
and yes i am expecting a response from you as well pdq being the Defender of the small cube sbc.
Glenn1018 Jun 6th, 03, 5:45 AM Head intake runners of about 170cc or 180cc, Weiand 8004 or Performer RPM and keep the Q-Jet, forged flat tops.
I'd check into Pat Kelley's DCR calulator. Try to get a good quench figure. Plug in different cams and CRs and check the results. I'd suggest a solid cam.
With 64cc chambers the 327 will have about 9.7CR, about 9.2 with 69cc chambers. You may find that you can run the 64cc heads with a cam that'll produce a good DCR. Just don't pick a cam with no bottom end, with all that weight you're going to need it.
Unclepennybags Jun 6th, 03, 6:06 AM I've got the Trick Flow heads on my .030" over 327. I drove the thing back and forth to work last year and part of this year. No durability problems and I drive it hard. Decent (17 mpg combined) fuel economy on 89 octane fuel. The other details are in my sig.

jeffc Jun 6th, 03, 8:37 AM I had a CC268 in my 327 prior to it's destruction. Ran pretty well. In fact, I just put it in my 355. It had the popups and 76cc heads (about 9 to 1). Funny combo, but I bought it used. I personally wouldn't run a cam much bigger than the 350 horse factory cam. I'm sure there are better profiles available, but that is a nice size area to stay in.
If you run the toplines, I would get the little ones - 180cc port and 64cc chambers. Then let me know how it runs. That's probably what I will build next. :D
Also, don't discount the vortecs! I think they would be great on a 327 with the 350 horse cam and some flattops.
Keep us posted
68Nomad Jun 6th, 03, 2:26 PM Well i'll definately keep you guys posted, a month or two down the line when it happens. i know with all that weight im toting around that i'm gonna need some low end. The machine shop closest to me suggested the toplines (and no they are not a distributor) over the vortecs because they are not terribly expensive and to make the vortecs (or my doublehumps) match up or outperform the toplines it'd cost more than getting the toplines in the first place. Thank you for the suggestions so far. . keep em comin'
hescop Jun 6th, 03, 3:02 PM Here's my 327 combo:
.030 cylinders
flat-top pistons
Comp XE268 cam
Vortec heads (64cc)
Performer RPM Manifold (vortec specific)
Performer Carb 600 CFM
stock HEI ignition
2400 stall converter
700R4 trans
Eaton 3.73 Posi
(The trans and rear-end combo are great for it. The low 1st gear get's it to wrap up quickly, and of course the overdrive for the freeway.)
It runs good on either 92 or 93 octane. I haven't seen 91 since moving east, but I had similar compression (with different heads) back then and it ran fine.
So far it has put my '71 into the high 13's with street tires.
cjlandry Jun 6th, 03, 5:39 PM The Vortecs were designed from the factory to work well with anything from 325" to 350" engines. Plenty of 5.3 Liter Vortec engines on pickups with happy owners.
I have no experience with Pro-Topline heads, but they seem to be a fine product.
Weigh your options and go with whatever "feels better" to you.
If you're thinking Vortec heads and want a deal on a used Performer RPM intake, drop me a line. I'm not looking to move this thing, but since I have two, I'll cut a deal on one of them.
Bob Johnson Jun 7th, 03, 4:18 PM graemlins/waving.gif DJS,
I have been running a small journal 327 on 91 for a while now with no problem.
.030 flat tops
The old 461 dbbl humps, 62cc heads
L-79 350hp cam. Need the duration with over 10 to 1 compression.
600cfm Holly on a factory 300hp Vett intake.
HEI @ 15 deg int timeing.
I started out with a PG and 3.08 pegleg, Not a good combo with the L-79 cam. Rolling starts and run like crazy past 2700 RPM to 7K.
Then I installed TH350, The little 327 likes haveing a 1st gear. Then I changed to a 12 bolt posi with 3.42 gear. It liked that so much, I am installing 700-r4. I will let you know how that works out.
The 327 combo I used was a factory combo so I knew what to expect and I had most of the parts.
68Nomad Jun 7th, 03, 5:28 PM I too have the stock PG, but thatnks to Troy (Gokou) I've got a TH350 to go in when i have the engine out. Not sure which heads i have @ the moment but the 62cc chamber sounds accurate from what i have seen of my car thus far. Kepp em coming guys. This is real valuable stuff.
Hmm... .040 over = 333 that'd be on odd one eh?
Glenn1018 Jun 7th, 03, 5:29 PM At the risk of jinxing it I have to say I'm pleased that no one has even alluded to using a different crank.
Last year SDPC had the lowest price on Dart Iron Eagles that I could find, since you're thinking about heads. There are many good options.
68Nomad Jun 7th, 03, 6:19 PM Me too, also not that it is a 68 so it's not a small journal 327. however if i HAVE to get a new one for reasons unforseen, i'll prolly ask you ctas for suggestions on that as well.
Bob Johnson Jun 7th, 03, 7:09 PM If you have to replace the crank, I bet you could build a 355 for less than a .030 over 327.
68Nomad Jun 7th, 03, 7:40 PM Shh... i know, which is why i am hoping not to have to do so. I'd like to keep my small block small.
jeffc Jun 7th, 03, 8:03 PM You can... My 355 is a small journal 355 - cast as a 1964 327.
