We use helicoils and have never had a problem but.....you have to be absolutely sure that when you drill the hole for the Helicoil Tap, that it is perfectly straight or you will have a fit trying to get the bolt in later.
Hope this helps,

Thanks Rob.

BillsCamino Feb 3rd, 03, 3:22 PM Rob,
Which hole is it?
You don't happen to have an old SB head laying around that you could place on the block, bolt it down in a few places, and use it as a guide to pilot your helicoil drill?
If not, when I get back to work, I'll make up a drill block to use.
I've got helicoils, too. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif
vonswanko Feb 3rd, 03, 4:50 PM Bill, once again you're the man.I dropped the heads off this morning.Even that guy knew how cool you were.
I don't have any extra heads. Its the first lower hole driverside. If you could make a drill block that would be great. Thanks Rob

Let me understand this right...it's the first hole in the row of bolts outside the valve cover. The ones that take the shortest headbolt, right? I've got a short block hanging on the engine stand that I can take a look at and determine correct helicoil length.
IF I get released by the doc tomorrow, I'll be back at work tomorrow night and get something made up. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif
Greg will do a good job on your heads...
vonswanko Feb 3rd, 03, 6:59 PM Bill, thats correct first of the short ones.Hole looks about 3/4 deep into water jacket. Thanks again.Rob
On my 454 i used a helicoil, i just drilled it out with no guide, just be eye, turned out perfect, the existing hole kind of just guided the drill bit, you just kind of have to let it drill itself
