I have a 65 chevelle with a 283/powerglide. The car smokes when started. It smokes for about 15 to 20 minutes and then it stops. It happens everytime I start it. It doesn't smoke while driving and doesn't make any weird noises. It sounds really good. Does anyone know why this is happening? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

If it's not black smoke then it's likely not your choke. If its blue smoke there is a possibility your oil returns are clogged up in the heads which was a fairly common thing on the old cars. When the oil returns are clogged excess oil is left in the heads which can leak down the guides overnight and really cause a lot of smoke for the 1st few mins you start the car. So pull the valve covers and check the oil return holes (esp in the rear portion of the heads) to ensure they are clean. If not just clean them out with a screwdriver trying to keep all the crap out of the motor.

I would run the motor for a few mins after your done cleaning the returns then change the oil/filter to be safe.

If it's white smoke and has a very sweet odor to it (If running ant freeze)you may have a coolent leak in a head/s and or head/intake gasket so look for that too.

Condensation can build up in the exhaust over night, especially if it is left out side. I don't know if it would smoke or steam for 15-20 minutes though.
