: Best Headers?
murph4 Jan 14th, 03, 9:33 PM Looking for header recommendations for a 71 454. Would like to hear from anyone running headers today. I have heard horror stories about some that leak etc etc. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Murph

There are several to choose from Hooker,Headman etc... the whole trick to headers is the initial tightening sequence,
treat them like a head bolt pattern start in the center and do a clockwise circle working your way to the outside. The most important thing is don't tighten them fully on the first pass do it in two or three steps, run your motor for about 25 miles and start the procedure all over and you should be good to go for the rest of the summer with no hassles and no leaks.
jpete Jan 15th, 03, 1:32 AM Use Stage 8 bolts and never worry about them again.
swm233 Jan 15th, 03, 5:50 AM I've had about every brand header over the years, but I've never seen the quality like the Doug's ceramic coated sbc headers that I just bought. they are expensive and heavy, but very well built.

SSpete67 Jan 15th, 03, 6:34 AM I'm running Sanderson Headers, I love them. They have a great look and fit great.
car-nut Jan 15th, 03, 7:54 AM I have the dynomax and they fit great! No scratches dings or dents getting them in either. Best of all their cheap$$$ $135 for mine. There is no doubt the Dougs are superior to the d/m it's just a matter of priority for me. The only thing I would do different I think, is I would have got ceramic coated.

pcs0snq Jan 15th, 03, 8:59 PM If you want to make some extra steam, consider STEP headers. Davis make them and a few others.

SoCalRat Jan 16th, 03, 10:40 PM Actually Thorleys belongs to his ex-wife. His new brand is just called Dougs.
Sell them at Original Parts Group. Nice headers.

I dont have any yet but plan on getting some this summer. I have installed a number of sets and they are just plan awsome, well worth the $$.
BTW Doug just moved into a new shop and is just getting stuff going, he just got the ok from the city to start moving last Tuesday and should be up and rolling soon. Thorley's are pretty much the same thing but they are no longer making new products just building.

Cable Jan 18th, 03, 3:53 AM I have to vote for Doug's as well. I have them on my '70 El Camino with a BBC and I can't say enough good things about them.
They are just a great header. Great fitment and even better construction.
Go Doug's and forget about every other brand out there.
Just my thoughts.
