Check to make sure the chamber(s) haven't been beat up on the one(s) that spun the bearing(s) b/c they can get close and even hit the heads when they go bad!!

Might have a cracked chamber(s)???

There's problems with these heads on 283's. the bore is so small the valves can hit the top of the block. I've had this problem on an engine I was building, they wouldn't work. I've seen other guys claim the got away with it. Might depend on whetherr you've got 1.94 or 2.02 valves, it's close.

Check carefully before bolting, IMHO.

It's all in the valve lift. I think there is a limit of like .480" or so with respect to the big valve, double-hump heads before you get into cylinder wall contact on a 283.

I do know my nephew's 283 had a TRW hy- cam that is about a .440" lift, 240 or so at .050 duration in it and he never had any problems with it AND I have it now!!!

-291, 2.02"/1.60", double-hump heads on a stock bore 283!!!

This and the fact stock Vortec's are lift limited is why I keep harping about using lift limited cam's in these applications instead of machining the Vortec's or hitting the cylinder walls on the smaller bore motors if you try to use a high lift cam!!!

I ran a 283 with the old 300HP 327 camelhumps with no problem. It had 1.94 intake though and the cam was fairly mild GM "151". I'd sure check clearances to be safe and definitely magniflux those heads to be sure they are not cracked. Getting pretty hard to find camelhumps that are still useable. If they require any significan't work you'd be better with some new aftermarket's.
