I was going to buy the 502 crate engine, but my uncle is going to give me his old 396. He raced it for a while, but can't remember what's in it. I think he said he ran mid 11sec. I would like to know how much power you can get out of a 396 and it be streetable?

Free is Good, Take the 396 and freshen it up put it in your chevelle and drive it, 396s have plenty of power. Save your $$$$$

Dave is right the 502 conversion is a real pain. I helped a friend do one pretty expensive but the end result is nice. That 396 will pin you back just fine.

Would you care to elaborate on the 502 conversion? They are the same block(more or less),I don't understand where the pain comes in.All you have to do is wire in an electric fuel pump http://www.chevelles.com/forum/confused.gif

Hey Bob, my friend ordered the "correct" oil pan from GM and replaced the one it comes with. Than we couldn't get the engine to fit w/o hitting. So he bought another aftermarket pan, didn't fit either. Finally got one from Moroso that fit good. Maybe everyone else knows this from the start but for a couple of rookies it wasn't a great experience. Until you turn it over of course. Than you forget all about the cussin & fussin. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Is it true that all 502 also do not have the clutch linkage pivot boss, and therefore need a special bracket to run a stock-type clutch linkage?

For the 502 swap on a 70-72 you will need
the followind oil pan.
you will need a GMPP oil pan kit (p/n 12495360)To make the 502 fit the engine bay( you won't have a windage tray in this pan)it calls for a shorter sump to clear the cross member. The kit includes four maincap bolts, a new pickup, a dipstick and tube and a one piece gasket.
I just read this in the new issue of Chevelle world.
Just one of the many reasons to get hooked up to A.C.E.S.
BTW. You can't go wrong with the 369 either! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
P.s. you can use the 307 motor mounts for this swap.
Sorry I don't have my CW in front of me.
But I think that was everything Except for the the clutch.
Ok. sorry for the edits but I found the p/n and you will have to buy an adapter for the clutch
Scoggin & dickey sell this item.
Again I hope this helps

Well now depends. An 11 second 396 COULD be a bear to manage on the street if it has lots of cam duration, etc. I'd almost be more comfortable if he said "12 second", since it would imply more streetable.

You take the 396 no matter what! Ask unc how nasty the cam is. How does it idle? How much converter stall does it need?

You define streetable. Some dont mind running a vacuum can and a like a real choopy idle. Others want it more docile and able to pull enough vacuum for brakes on its own.

To get the 500 hp of the 502, it would have to be pretty stout in terms of cam and compression and make it peak power in the 6500-7000 rpm range I should think, while the much bigger 502 can push 500 hp out at 5200 or so. Thats the way I always thought of my 439 anyway.

And YOU define streetable.

I have a buddy with a 750 hp in his 70 chevelle.
93 octane. power disc brakes with no vac can.
several of my buddies have 9/10 sec. street cars.
It is like you said it is according to your combo. What you want. ect.
about anything is streetable anymore. what is practical to your needs is the thing.
