Uh...wait a minute...based on the seller's description, I don't see a single original L88 component on the entire engine with the possible exception of the block, and and as far as I know L88's used the same block as other 4-bolt main 427's, so with the VIN machined off there's no way to prove the block is even an L88 block. Is there any way to prove those are L88 heads? Am I missing something, or is the "Buy It Now" price like $15,000 too high?

The "buy it now" price $19,500..it starts at 15K
the block casting # is just for a 1967 2 or 4 bolt 427..but it does have the Corvette L88 suffix code "IT" on that engine pad...I'm not saying it makes it worth 20K either..

I'll take one of new Ram Jet ZL 1's for 20,000 and Know what I'm gettin. Instead of pieces and parts. My thoughts.

Wow. Paid $600 for my L88 back in 1977( used 1972 crate with L89 heads). Sold it to a friend for 650 two years later( my cost plus rings, bearings, gasket set and nothing for the machine work) when I went off to school. Bought it back 5 years ago for $1800. Just spent about $2400 to freshen it up.

And I thought I was spending alot of money!

Let's see, 20 cars produced with a L-88 in '67, what are the odds that this is one of the 20 engines......

Hell,
I've got a 1968 L72 435 HP tri-power engine I'll turn loose for that kinda $$$.
No intake but heads, block, crank, etc.. are all there..

Actually, the L72 was a single 4-bbl 425HP 427. L71 was the Tri-Power 435 HP 427 FWIW.

David,
I beleive you are correct.
I looked up the numbers on this motor once but forgot everything.
I originally thought it was an L88, didn't know there were 3 different (or 4 I guess L89), 430 and 435 hp motors.

It has an IR code on the deck (or IRR).
1968 date codes, 840 heads, the whole shooting match.
Intake was long gone.

Gene,
It's too valuable to harass that way. If I scattered it....
I can always buy a used 454 block, a new Gm forged crank for $250, a set of truck rods, throw toghether a 427 and run the snot out of it and not worry about it as far as from a restoration value perspective.

The 'Vette fanatics would have a tizzy if I was using it for that.
Even has the 7/16 pushrods.
Spun a rod bearing.
other than that it could probably go back together.
Maybe one of these days I'll throw it on Ebay to see what it's REALLY worth. No reserve...

All 20 of the '67 L88's have been accounted for &
17 of them now exist. I'm lucky to know one owner in Florida because I sold him an original L88 carburetor for his restoration & I had the opportunity to swap a lot of notes with another
owner in Calif. Interesting to know also that one '67 L88 that was shipped to the Middle East & destroyed in an accident was owned by the Shah of Iran. Very few of these Corvettes have the original block. Virtually all of them were raced, blown up, swapped out, etc. & if that block is authentic & has the SN stamped on it then it's worth every penny.

The "rich kid" I bought my crate 88 off, had one of the 20 as well. His name was John something or other, and lived in Webster, NY, my hometown. When I was searching for a 3X2 intake, the local Corvette parts guy, Jim Guck, asked a bit about about the motor and I told him where I got it.

" Hey did you know he had a REAL 1967 L88 coupe?"

" Yeah Jim, that was for sale as well, $6500, if I recollect!"

Now, you would have done just as well in Wal-Mart stock, but, of course, I had neither.

I have a friend in Virginia Beach, VA who has the original L88 (complete engine) from his 67 Chevelle he had in 67. The car was yellow/black interior and had other performance options. We cruised and raced many cars with that Chevelle. He also has a 396 out of a chevelle also. The L88 was his first big block and he got a passion to keep it...and is still sitting in the garage. In 68 he bought a big block Camaro and raced it at Emporia Va. Did real well with many a wins with it.
BTW..he knows what the L88 is worth and I dont believe he will ever sell it in the near future

I really don't think are worth what people think they are, the Ebay auction will prove me right or wrong.

L88s NEVER, I repeat, NEVER, came in ANY Chevelle. You would have had to pull a HUGE STRING at corporate for that. Not likely. Might be a few 427s built that way, but not 88s.

Not calling anyone a liar, just don't want misinformation spread as truth.
