Got a 454 that was in a friend's '68 Camaro. He had no oil pan problems. I'm pretty sure the oil pan would be original to the motor, which was an 84ish truck. If it fit in the Camaro think it would be okay in the 'velle, or should I think about looking elsewhere.

How can you tell in advance on GM pans on what they fit? P/N? Thanks.

Truck pans typically have a "step" in the pan from the front to the back as you approach the main sump area. On the passenger cars (full framed such as A bodies) the pan tapers back to the main sump and lacks the "step". You must have a passenger car pan to clear the "saddle" the motor rides over on a chevelle.

I suspect that since the camaro is a "uni-body", that may be the reason you can get away with using a truck pan but I can't say for sure.

Johnny69 - Just ask me how I know a truck pan won't work! I learned this back in the early 80's when I was working on my first SS 396 coupe... graemlins/sad.gif

68 Camaro steering linkage is behind the front crossmember so I think it would use a camaro only oil pan. That pan might not fit your Chevelle.

Soccerguy,
I just took a 454/th400 out of a 79 Suburban and put it into my 71 Chevelle. The pan definely will not fit. The pan you'll need does not have the step in it. I switched out the pan and oil pump and ordered a stock pan and pump from Summit.
