: 216?
1BLACKHARLEY Feb 18th, 04, 5:51 PM BUDDY OF MINE HAS A 52 CHEVY P/UP. IT LOOKS AMAZING, WAS RESTORED AT SOME POINT AND LOOKS NEW. HE THINKS THERE IS A OIL LEAK FROM THE TIMING COVER. ANYBODY HAD EXPIERENCE WITH THIS? ANY TRICKS TO FIX, OR DO I JUST GET OUT THE LTV. ANYBODY KNOW TORQUE SPECS ON THE BOLTS? I'D HATE TO HURT HIS TRUCK. HE THINKS IT'S A 235. IT'S BEEN SAID IT'S THE ORIGINAL MOTOR, BUT AFTER 50YRS. I DON'T KNOW. ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.
d1_bradley Feb 18th, 04, 6:34 PM Well, its been about 45 years since I've owned a 216, but I'll give it a shot. Here's a site to figure out just what you have. (216 or 235) http://www.adlersantiqueautos.com/articles/htbuyaot4.html
After that, and this is just a guess, but I don't 'think' there is a 'front seal' on a 216. I think there is just a reverse groove on the front hub with a splash washer behind the cover that had a cork filled groove. Like I said, its been over 40 years since I rebuilt my '47 Coupe. This is one of those things that you want to be VERY sure you can finish, especially if its someone else's truck. A gasket set is probably available from Kanter's and they might also know if the 'seal' is there. But, you'll still need to know exactly what you've got before you call.
pdq67 Feb 18th, 04, 8:23 PM He, He!!
I have half a set of cast-iron Fenton split manifolds if your friend could find the mate, he can have it!!
I can't bring myself to pitch it and I lost the mate years ago..
Same thing with my old aluminum AFB 4-barrel intake off an aluminum 215 Buick motor!! It's too cute ta pitch!!

malibu man Feb 19th, 04, 10:01 PM pdq67,
You sure love the old stuff don't ya! tongue.gif Hehe! I think we share the same interest's buddy!
I'm also into the old stovebolt trucks! I've got a '40, a '49, a '51, a '61, and a '65. The '61 has a big 261 engine in it and the 65 of course is new enough to have the 327, so I can't really call it a stovebolt. Also have a '48 International KB-6. They are all in running condition, besides the '51 which needs a different 216 block put in it due to a pinhole in the cylinder. Looking for another '61, would really love to find one. Also, looking for another 261 engine. Really love the way those engines sound straight-piped with a load on it. Not much can beat that, for me at least. :D
Please explain more about that manifold. I'm interested in what it is? Is it like the dual McGurk intake setup, or is it exhaust?
Let me know if you want to talk more about these engines! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
1BLACKHARLEY,
Sorry to interrrupt your thread. If you would like some more info, head on over to The Stovebolt Page (http://stovebolt.com/) for more info on these trucks and engines. Good bunch of people over there, also has a wealth of information. Let me know if you would like some more info on them.
malibu man Feb 20th, 04, 12:17 AM I think I have a guess on what those manifolds are for now. There exhaust headers, correct? :D
pdq67 Feb 20th, 04, 7:10 AM Yes, cast-iron, two piece contoured headers..
My father-in-law years ago sold a 5 window, 1/2 ton Chevy with a granny trans in it for like $125 before I even knew he did it. Like 6-months later sorta deal...
The old sucker WAS stone stock with NOTHING wrong with it EXCEPT a dead generator or old regulator!!
NO rust or dents, but as usual for an old farm truck, bad paint..
He figured I was going ta beg him out of it so he unloaded it without me knowing it!! Heck, I woulda gave him $150 for it!!!
I drove it to Macon, MO about 50 miles round trip one Sat. AND it ran like a dream!!

malibu man Feb 20th, 04, 2:20 PM What engine would have that 5 window had? What year was that. Those trucks sure run smooth don't they. The 216's kind of have there own sound, can't really describe it.
I should send you some sound clips of some old stovebolts. One's a 235 with dual carbs and headers, one other is a GMC 302 with a McGurk Intake, 3 Webers, and a McGurk Roller Cam. They rev em up pretty good. That first one with the headers really raps! They both sound sweet, but that second one sounds like a racing engine with that roller cam in it. The sound almost puts my 383 to shame. smile.gif
I'm having difficulty finding 261 engines. I just love them. They rev so easy. I might try and locate a 348 era-correct engine or a 283 to go through for a '61.
pdq67 Feb 20th, 04, 9:01 PM I think it was between '49 and '51 but I can't really say for sure b/c I'm not a P/U kinda guy!! But I sure liked that one!!
And yes, Malibou, A hopped up 261 in a '51/'52 Ragtop pulled my '57, 283 stick one Sat. night going out of town EASY!! That's when I got the full respect AND love for a split-6 and Smitties!!
Thinking about the sound of the splits even now brings chills up my back as he went up and down through the gears walking away from me!!
LOVE THAT "COP-CALLING" SOUND TO THIS DAY!!!
AND I always wanted ta play with a full-house, Gimmy 302, 6-banger!!

malibu man Feb 21st, 04, 9:19 PM Can you enlighten me on what smitties are? Are they those nostalgia mufflers that i've seen?
Do you recall what years they made those 261's? Do you have any info or know of any websites/forums that have info on these sixes?
I think it would have been cool to hot rod stuff like that when it came out.
Downloaded a few videos of a 64 Pontiac Parisienne with a 409/manual setup. One was a road test, one was a burnout, and one was a quarter mile. Man that engine sounds sweet!
pdq67 Feb 21st, 04, 10:25 PM "Smitties", ("Smithys"), are the original glasspacks that are still sold by, who is it, Patriot or something like that??
Try this link..

malibu man Feb 22nd, 04, 9:33 PM There you go! That's what I was thinking of. Yep, Patriot sells them, either in the Jegs or Summit catalog. I think they're a blue color. I bet they sound mean!
Thanks for the link. Checked it out. Are those prices reasonable? Not sure what stuff like that goes for. I've been checking out ebay for 348/409 stuff and people are making a lot of money off that stuff. It's hard to keep up with other people. Must be made of money! There was a '61 Impala on there. It had a 348 Tri-Power engine that came with it, which wasn't even in the car. Looked like all the body parts were from different cars, they were all different colored. It didn't have the grille, and there were at least four rust holes in the car. It's a like $5500 right now with how many days going. Maybe it's worth that much, it just kind of turned me away with all the different colors and stuff. Maybe the engine is worth that much?
Tom Mobley Feb 22nd, 04, 9:43 PM that stovebolt link up above wouldn't work for me. try this for the stovebolt forums:
