Hi,
I am looking for a new bare chevy big block block that will not cost me an arm and a leg. I want to learn to build an engine from scratch but as a high schooler I am on a tight budget. Does anyone have any ideas?

I appreciate your input.

Thanks

If you want to build a big block, you may be better off buying a complete 454 that needs rebuilding. You should be able to find one for less that $500. If you start with just a block, buting all the other parts you need, such as pistons, crank, rods and heads just to name a few, will cost a small fortune. Buy a complete engine and you have all of this already and replace only what needs replacing.

Good rebuildable big blocks can often be found in junkyards. A lot of them came in many trucks, rvs, etc... Or you might just get lucky and find a good passenger car motor. Check around, stock parts are all fairly inexpensive, but easier to get everything all at once in a complete motor and go from there.

PAW might be a place to look.

Tight budget and big block do not go together very well. Depending on what you mean by tight budget, the 350 Chevy small block is the best motor to learn on and also the most economical to get parts for. Cores are plentiful. And for power, a decent 350 build will still put out 400HP in street trim.

I agree with what's been posted so far. A big block is definitely not the way to go if you're on a budget. But, if you must, buy a complete engine and tear it down.
