: How much does a 454 weigh?

I'm interested in getting a block stand and want to be sure it's beefy enough for my 454, with heads!

The biggest I've seen so far is 1,250 lbs. capacity. Is that enough?

Also, most models I've seen have a pinwheel at the back, rather than having 4 posts to secure the block. Having a pinwheel with that much weight attached would make me nervous, but maybe I'm over reacting.

Any recommendations?

Thanks for the help!

Andy

ps I anticipate using it for both short periods of time as well as leaving the block on the stand for several months, depending on what we're up to (ie winter projects, etc.).

don't know the exact bbc weight. but 1250lb capacity engine stands will hold one easily.

I'm not sure of the exact weight, but these values should be in the ballpark for a complete "stock" engine.

Small block - 560 lbs.
Big block - 700 lbs.

Go to maxtool.com and get the $89 engine stand they have. I think it is a 1250 lb capacity. I just bought one and have my 454 attached to it and I could probably attach 2 more to it and still not feel nervous. It's really built well. graemlins/thumbsup.gif Their engine hoist for $99 is also a steal. I pulled my 454 by myself, no problem and the hoist was solid as a rock. graemlins/thumbsup.gif graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I bought an engine stand at Harbor Freight that has a capacity of 2000 lbs. My fully assembled 454 (iron heads, iron intake, etc.) is on it right now and it dosen't sag. Engine barely moves when you try to shake it. It's a beast. $85.

Advertised weight of a cast iron BBC is 680 lbs. Around 580 w/ aluminum heads.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I guess BB's aren't as heavy as I thought. I was guessing around 1,000.

I also didn't think those stands with the pinwheel instead of 4 solid posts could take that much weight without tipping - especially if you do any real work on it while it's on there - but there's must be a lot more to them than is obvious from the pics they show in the catalogs.

I bought a folding 2,000lb stand from Max Tools for $89. The only bummer is shipping. Cost $64 to get it here from CA!! graemlins/clonk.gif

Anyway, thanks for the help and advice! I really appreciate it!! graemlins/beers.gif

Hey LS-5, I'm just down the street from you! Allison Park.

Generally a BB weighs 685lb according to this site: Engine weights. (http://www.team.net/sol/tech/engine.html)

I think I'm using the 1000lb stand from Summit. They also make a neat floor stand on wheels with an open front & back, allowing you to attach the tranny.
