: Gas smells BAD!!
White71Elco Feb 6th, 05, 10:50 PM I've had my Elco sitting in the garage for at least 1 year. That was the last time I did any work to it,(vortec heads, push rods, intake,RRs). I had it running only to set valves, didnt drive it.
It really hasnt been driven in about 2-3 yrs. just this week I got the carb rebuilt and started it. While I had it running in the garage the exhaust smell was VERY bad. Burned my eyes a little, and once i came inside I had the stench on my clothes. Really bad smell.
So, is it just bad gas? What should i do, let it run the tank and fill with new gas or what? I really need to get this thing on the road, as I'm having my Impala going to the body shop.
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Albert :D
LeoP Feb 6th, 05, 11:12 PM Yes, it is sour gas, you're lucky it even ran on that gas. Drain/siphon it out and put in some fresh.
White71Elco Feb 6th, 05, 11:48 PM Ok I'll do that. Will there be any damage to the engine running with that old gas?
pdq67 Feb 6th, 05, 11:49 PM He, He!! Gin smells BAD!! Bad gas just smells like well, bad gas!!
Fill her up with good gas and a couple of bottles of Seafoam and then drive her or at least set her on fast idle to burn a bunch of it out so you can replace it with GOOD gas!!
UNLESS you want to syphon out all the bad gas AND then figure out some way to "environmentally" get rid of it!!

PS., gas goes bad a lot faster nowadays then it used to imho... It might not create as much "varnish" as it used to , but it still goes bad faster to me anyway....
67chevy2 Feb 7th, 05, 12:09 AM Could be the carb, especially if it's a Holley. Sounds a bit rich! If not the carb, and it really is bad gas, use it in your lawnmower to get rid of it. If you live in a rural area, it makes dandy starting fluid for that unwanted brush pile! Just make sure you do it in the open, and light it quick, before the fumes spread! smile.gif smile.gif Steve

BillK Feb 7th, 05, 7:44 AM Albert,
Put a couple of cans of fuel treatment in the tank, then fill it up with fresh fuel, then drive it. It should clear up and I doubt that you will have any problems. When I had my 73 Z-28 I only used to drive it about 500 miles a year and I never had any problems. I used to keep Amoco High Test in it, but don't think the brand makes a lot of difference. I don't think that unleaded fuels have the staying power of the older fuels from years ago.
White71Elco Feb 7th, 05, 9:38 AM Thanks for all the suggestions guys!
Bill, what kind of fuel treatment do you mean? Seafoam as was mentioned in the other post or some type of fuel stabilizer.
