When I start the car it will idle fast and will not slow down unless I keep going back and hitting the gas pedal. Each time I do this it will slow a little more until it gets to normal idle speed.I know something is not right because when the car was new it would kick down to a slower speed on it"s own as it warmed up.Thanks for any help you guys may give me. I am trying to get the car back to where everthing is working like it should. It is a 72 SS 402 engine.

Is it getting colder where you live?

sounds like the choke may need a little lubrication to work easier.

If you are using your original Qjet, check your "Choke Pull Off" canister. Could be leaking.

Thanks, I am not sure what the canister looks like or how to check it but I will go look again. It does it in hot weather or cold it seems to make no difference.

There might be nothing wrong at all. What carb do you have?
One of my old carbs was like this (I think the edelbrock 600) It was because of the design of the fast idle cam. When you push the gas to start the engine (cold) the choke pushes the fast idle cam under the trottle. Even after the choke warms up, the fast idle cam stays under the throttle, holding your idle speed. When the choke is warmed up a bit, as soon as you touch the gas the fast idle cam will drop away, and let the throttle close further, and lower the idle.
Some carbs are different. Some will have the choke force the fast idle cam both directions - up and down. Some only force it one way - up. Gravity will allow the cam to drop down once the choke is open far enough, but only when the throttle isn't resting on the cam and holding it there. One quick little throttle blip will let it come right down.

It has the original carb on it. Years ago it would slow down on it"s own. Now no matter how long it runs or hot it gets it still runs fast unless I hit the gas pedal.
