: Oil Blown out breather
sarblade Nov 22nd, 03, 11:42 PM My 350 has a PCV on the passenger side, and I have a breather on the driver's side. Problem I'm having is that I get alot of oil blown out of the breather and messin' up the area under the hood. I checked the PCV and get good vacuum. I think I'll replace the part anyway. The breather isn't very good, it has loose parts in it, so I'll replace that as well. These are symptoms of what could be a potentialy bigger problem, could the amount of pressure build up be caused by bad rings? I haven't done a compression test (bought the car about a month ago), gonna do that tomorrow. Anyway, my other question I have after reading past posts is what is meant by baffles in the valve covers? I've had my M/T's off and have noticed no such things. Maybe this is the problem. Any thoughts? Thanks
SuperchargedChevelle454SS Nov 22nd, 03, 11:53 PM loose things inside as in it rattles when you shake it? cause if that is the case, that just means the valve is good, that is how you check them if i am remembering correctly!
sarblade Nov 23rd, 03, 12:08 AM No the PCV does rattle like its supposed to, I mean the breather has loose things in it. I suspect its the filter or screen or whatever is in it.
Pat Kelley Nov 23rd, 03, 3:32 AM More that likely there are no baffles in the valve covers. Baffles are devices that help separate the oil out. Stock covers have very effective ones, very few aftermarket ones have any. Are the MTs cast or stamped.
phel69 Nov 23rd, 03, 8:23 AM Get a rubber grommet with an x cut in the bottom or something similar. These are designed to keep oil from splashing up into the breather and work well usually.
SWHEATON Nov 23rd, 03, 11:01 AM Your M/T valve covers with no baffles on the inside for the PCV and breather is flat out no good. Without the baffles oil will come out your breather and also be sucked into your PCV valve/system likely resulting in oil use,dirty/oil fouled plugs, etc.
I would 86 those old covers and get newer up to date ones with the correct baffles IMHO.
Also,if you replace your v/covers with baffled ones and you still have oil issues in the PCV & breather then i would suspect excessive blowby/ring seal issues which would mean it's rbld time. But,i would check this out before you commit to a teardown at that point with someone thats qualified to do so if you don't have the experience to make that call.

CDN SS Nov 23rd, 03, 11:15 AM Like others have said Good baffles are a must ....have had some success making some out of sheet aluminum and attatching with JB Weld on inside of aftermarket alum covers. FWIW
sarblade Nov 23rd, 03, 2:41 PM Thanks all for the posts, like swheaton says, I guess I should deepsix these ones, didn't like the cast M/T's anyway, too many vrevices. Anyone got a good idea on replacements. I was thinking the Edlebrock! Thoughts. BTW, has anyone got picturees on how to fabricate a baffle on the inside of these M/T's? They do have two nice holes on either side of the hole for somesort of baffle.
CDN SS Nov 23rd, 03, 9:34 PM The early MT's used to come with a circular disc that attatched to the vc with screws into those holes that had tubing holding them away from the valve cover ... not the best but better than nothing.
