Hey,

Does anyone know what the standard horsepower was on a 70 SB 400 4 bolt main with a Qjet? The engine was origianly in an Impala.

Second question. The engine is being rebuilt with:

400 CID, bored 0.030 over
TRW 9.5:1 flat top pistons
Stock crank and rods, turned 0.010 under.
Comp Cam, and lifters, 206/206 at 0.05, 0.425 intake and exhaust
TFS twisted wedge heads, 195CC intake, 64CC chambers, 2.02/1.60 valves.
Hooker headers with 2 1/2" pipes and Flowmasters
MSD Pro Billet distributor, MSD coil, ignition control and wires
Edlebrock RPM Air Gap maifold
695 CFM Road Demon carb

Provide I set everything up right, how much power can I reasonsably expect
from this engine?

Thanks for your help

As is you will probably put out around 360HP without accesories and 340HP with accesories. That tiny 252H is really holding back this combo. Is there a reason for using such a small cam? By swapping in a 280 magnum power should jump another 25-30HP. just something to think about.

Stangslayer,

I guess the cam is there because it come with the engine. In general, I want to keep the idle as stable (not lopey) as I can and still get decent power as the car is going to be driven a lot on the street, so I want good drivability. I have two cams with this engine as well as the stocker. One of the cams is the one mentioned, the other is a Sig Erson TQ40H with 220/228 at 0.05 and 0.472 lift. Any suggestions?

Go with the Erson cam, I think you will like it.

And my 406SB with a Melling 280/230, .480" hydraulic cam and about 9.5 to 1 CR. or so with my M-20, 3.31's and 26.5" tires was on the cam down low AND my wife used ta really get PO'ed when she would buck cruising around the block up town on friday evening!!!

But from say 2500 or so on up it ran great!!

my very old chiltons manual shows 2 400 engs for 70' a 2bbl with 9:1 comp. 265hp/400ft lbs.
and a 4bbl with 10.25:1 comp. 330hp/410ft lbs.
I believe the eng code for the 2bbl is CGR
thats about all I can tell you.

I would go with the Erson cam. It will still be quite drivable but with a bit of lope. It should have no problem producing 15" vaccum. I think youll like it alot better than the 252H graemlins/thumbsup.gif .

I agree with the others, go with the Erson cam.
