: High Mileage Motor Oil.
FBody Jul 27th, 04, 12:42 PM Did anyone tried High Mileage Motor Oil (i.e. advertised for engines with more than 75,000 mile).
What is your opinion, did you notice any benefits.
Thank,
Daniel.
oscar_a_wiggy Jul 27th, 04, 1:23 PM i used valvoline high mileage. i noticed the car did not leak as much oil as normal. i think it has some additive to help control oil leak by making the gaskets swell.
Fried_Guy Jul 27th, 04, 2:10 PM I used castrol and got the same results as oscar... good stuff.
novadude Jul 27th, 04, 2:23 PM It's good stuff. Generally, most HM oils are formulated on the thick side of the viscosity range, so a HM 10W-30 will have a slightly higher viscosity than the "regular" 10W-30 oil. HM oils are actually synthetic blends, with Group V esters added to help with seal conditioning. Rest assured that they are no marketing gimmick... they actually are one step above "normal" dino oil. The question is, are they worth the extra money? I guess that depends on how they perform in your specific application.
Anyone notice Quaker State has a Chevelle on thier HM bottle label? smile.gif
Pat Kelley Jul 27th, 04, 8:00 PM I have heard that newer oils have reduced zinc content. Anyone know if HM oil has more zinc than the newest regular oil?
Bob West Jul 27th, 04, 9:46 PM I tried Castrols one time,,,seems like the oil got dirtier quicker and looked bad after my trip to colorado, went back to syntec and all is well, seems to hold up better.
FBody Jul 28th, 04, 8:19 AM Thanks for your responses, I just changed my 69 Camaro oil to High Mileage Pennzoil 10W30.
We'll see what it does for the rear main seal.
Thanks,
Daniel.
novadude Jul 28th, 04, 9:00 AM have heard that newer oils have reduced zinc content. Anyone know if HM oil has more zinc than the newest regular oil? In some cases, the HM oils do have higher zinc (based on used and virgin oil analysis reports I have seen). Watch for zinc to drop further when API "SM" debuts later this year, as lower phosphorous levels are mandated by this spec.
I've been using 15W-40 HD oils in my Nova's 327. These oils are generally used in gasoline and diesel fleet applications. These almost ALWAYS have higher zinc than the passenger car 10W-30/10W-40 oils, and more detergents too. Since my car only gets used in the warmer months, I am not too concerned about the high viscosity of the HD fleet oil.
The forum at www.bobistheoilguy.com (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com) HUGE amounts of information / debate about various motor oils. You can search the Oil analysis boards to see how much zinc is in your favorite oil (assuming someone else is using it, and they have posted results).
NITRO Jul 28th, 04, 2:30 PM I used HM Valvoline in my 90' F250. It had a slight leak at the rear main seal, and after using the HM oil, the leak stopped. Then some bit#$ totalled it. graemlins/angry.gif

Patrick O'Rourke Jul 28th, 04, 3:25 PM What will the Hm oil do too the seals though if it's stopping leaks. Are the seals going to stop leaking and then swell to a point of being worse than when you started?
MalibuJerry350 Jul 28th, 04, 4:42 PM I dunno...with over 175,000 on my ATK long block, I still use Valvoline 10W30 with no problems. Used the same oil on my original 350 with over 335,000 miles on it! Of course, the car gets 104 miles a day on it, so the old "dino" stuff is fine.
Rich-L79 Jul 28th, 04, 5:07 PM I started using the Valvoline HM oil in my MR2 when it hit about 225,000. My oil consumption went UP. I switched back to Valvoline SynTec (conventional/synthetic blend) which I've used in this car ever since this oil first became available and all the quirky idling and oil consumption issues went away. With over 251,000 on the clock it uses no oil again but I don't know if that is due to the temporary use of the HM oil or the switch back to the SynTec.
My Honda Civic burns a quart about every 1000 miles (sometimes about 800 miles). I used Valvoline HM for a year and no improvement was seen, if anything consumption went UP. I replaced a slightly leaking valvecover gasket and oil consumption was still high. I switched back to regular Valvoline and oil consumption returned to pre-HM oil use levels and remains constant at about one quart to 800-1000 miles. Why spend the extra $$$ if it doesn't help? This 225,000 mile rusted out beater runs great but it's going to fall apart from severe rust pretty soon so I don't see the point in dumping excess money into it for less than zero results.
I'm not convinced these oils do what they say, at least my experiences haven't seemed to bear that out. But then I am dealing with severely high mileage cars.
fatlip Jul 28th, 04, 6:51 PM I always used engine restore on all my high millage cars. Seems to work great. Comes in a tall chrome can, 4-6-8 cyl mixtures.
pdq67 Jul 28th, 04, 6:54 PM Is this oil a dark teal color like the old h-d oils used to be??
I ask b/c to me, that was always an indication of the heavy-metal soap additives in them..
Back years ago is all...

Big James 4XL Jul 28th, 04, 7:24 PM I use everthing I can in my 303,000mi. S10, 4.3 Blazer! The HM Castrol works well with leaks as others have stated.
I also started using "Restore". It actually stopped blowby that was so severe raw oil was coming out the dipstick!!!
I even use Lucas oil stabilazer now but I can't tell that it's helping any, but hey, I got so many additives in it now who knows which is best!
"Lil Blaze" as it's become known smokes when you start it and old cold mornings hammers like a crew of crazed framming carpenters, but just like the famed battery bunny it keeps on going and going!

FBody Jul 30th, 04, 8:29 AM The Pennzoil 10W30 High Mileage Vehicle oil did work for me.
I tried my 350 1969 Camaro last night and it barely smoked (blue smoke) under severe deceleration under compression.
Will give it some time to see what it will do with my small rear main seal leak.
So far so good.
Daniel.

I added some to a Chevy 250 using a qt/1000 miles and it turned it into the mosquito sprayer from hell.
Turned out it caused the rings to stick in piston grooves.
Honed cylinders, cleaned grooves, installed new rings and all was well.
thunderstruck507 Aug 2nd, 04, 5:24 PM those chevy s10s are champs!
Ours has over 300,000 on the stock tranny and one engine swap from another S10.
I use Valoline H.M. oil with Lucas additive in all my high mile cars and it does cut down on smoke coming out of the tailpipe. But this is a short band aid fix, if the motor is worn out no motor oil will "fix it". Dave
Silver69Camaro Aug 3rd, 04, 1:12 PM Ford issued a statement a while back saying that high miliage motor oil is nothing but a slightly different blend of oil, and should just be considered a "designer" oil; then recommended that everyday motor oil should be used.
