: ENGINE SWAP 69'-396 to 75'-454
LXXVI Nov 4th, 02, 6:37 PM Hi everybody. This is my first engine swap and I have a few questions......
1. I plan on plumbing my 68' Chevelle with all new stuff. I also plan on using A/N fittings. The Intake is a performer RPM Air-Gap, with a Edelbrock Victor Water pump. My question is, is the correct A/N fittings a size 12 (3/4" hose)for the heater hoses and will this solve my problem of no screw in "nipples" for on the intake and water pump?
2. Will the brackets for the alternator and PS pump from my 69' 396 bolt up to a 454 from 75'?
3. I ordered a new temp sensor for my 75'-454, but noticed the intake looked like it had a hole for one. My 69'-396 has a temp sensor on the block (drivers side between 1 and 2 exhaust port) is this right? and do any other sensors connect to the block?
Thanks alot in advance.

mr 4 speed Nov 5th, 02, 7:21 AM Everything should bolt up fine. You can put the temp sensor where ever you want it,in the head or intake, especially with a 1975 454.Some of the older closed chamber heads don't have temp bosses drilled and tapped.

Rich-L79 Nov 5th, 02, 11:10 AM A word of caution on temp sensors. You need to make sure you use a temp sensor that has the following criteria for it to work accurately on the gauge you have:
1. buy the sensor based on the GAUGE you are using. If you are using a '68 dash gauge, buy the sending unit based on a '68 application.
2. if the gauge used worked off a sensor in the head or in the intake, make sure you install the sensor in the same place as the gauge used would have dictated.
3. If it is an aftermarket gauge with it's own attached sending unit and cable, install it where ever you desire (as long as the bulb doesn't bottom out against metal) with the location in the head being preferred for more accurate engine temps.
73Malibu Nov 5th, 02, 1:14 PM Don't forget you need a flexplate and harmonic balancer for a 454, the 454 is externally balanced, while your original 396 was internally balanced.
The temp sensor actually screws into the head, you also need the oil pressure sensor which screws into the block. Good advice to find a 68 396 gauge if you are still using the stock unit.
You can get NPT thread fittings with barbed ends from Home Depot or Autozone to thread into the intake water jacket and water pump. Otherwise you need the NPT to A/N adapter that screws into the engine.
Be gentle attaching the hoses to the heater core, manhandling the ends will end up with a leaker.
Maybe you should just get braided covered heater hose instead of true A/N fittings, you will need to make up adapters to attach to the heater core anyways, and every show car I see just has the covered hoses.

LXXVI Nov 5th, 02, 7:40 PM Where would the oil pressure sensor be on both engines? A 1969-396, a 1975-454....and does anybody know where I can find a cheap Damper/harmonic balancer for the 454?

LXXVI:
Hi I not sure but I think if you use a gauge you must put the sensor in the intake manifold beside the thermostat and if your using a temp light the sensor goes into the head. My buddy with a 454 had them reversed and was getting high temp readings on the gauge some thing like 230 or 240 deg. but the car didn't seem to be over heating. swapped the sensors and the gauge read 190 deg. He varified the sensor location temps with a digital lazer heat gun. Dave

The oil pressure tap is right above the oil filter, and they will interchange. You can buy a reasonably priced, good quality stock style balancer here: www.northernautoparts.com (http://www.northernautoparts.com)
