: Spectra fuel tank update
Geoff240ti Jul 18th, 11, 11:31 PM Just heard back from Spectra about their fuel tanks... they have been revised!
The email:
Mr. Walliser,
Yes this issue has been addressed, Spectra have modified the bowl where the pump sits to prevent fuel slosh and to solve the fuel starvation when cornering with low fuel in the tank. The new bowl has a baffle in it to keep the gas closer to the pump intake, also the fuel admission holes have been repositioned at the center of the bowl. The gas tank stock at the factory is the revised version.
You can order the revised version through any Part retailer in your area (we sell to all of them), but make sure that the part store gets it directly from the factory.
Thank you for your interest in Spectra Premium Industries products
Have a good day,

chuckd71 Jul 19th, 11, 4:52 AM Yeah, but will they replace the bad ones that some of us already have? Hope they put in a better pump as well.
ed1le Aug 12th, 11, 1:17 PM Has anyone purchased one recently that can verify if this has actually been resolved?
clm69 z28 Aug 13th, 11, 1:59 AM I have one of the new redesigned tanks coming in the next day or so and i will post the results.

Can't wait! It's either this or I'm going with the Impala tank.
Seagram's 72 Aug 21st, 11, 4:29 PM Updates?
clm69 z28 Oct 3rd, 11, 7:21 PM Well I just installed the latest generation tank and the early indications are pretty good. I have been driving it now for the last couple of weeks and I haven't experienced any stalling issues yet, and that was with as little as a 1/4 tank of gas. I put it through left and right turns and full throttle acceleration and had none of the old starvation issues. I haven't calibrated the gas gauge yet but I probably had between 5-8 gallons of gas to start and it worked fine.
I forgot to take some pics of the inside but the differences seem to be the old inner pump bowl has been bisected by an additional baffle and the bottom has more holes to allow fuel to get back into the bowl area. Other than that I didn't see any difference in the pump or anything else.
ed1le Oct 7th, 11, 3:12 PM Curious what your engine setup is b/c it looks like the Spectra pump is a stock pump. Any idea how much hp it'll support?
Leesnuts Oct 26th, 11, 2:24 AM Have a part number for the updated tank?
Thx,
Lee
dropped72ss Dec 10th, 11, 11:30 PM any updates? I'm in the market for a efi tank and am on a budget. If this tanks fuel starvation issue has been solved i'm all over this setup.
Bigjay Dec 15th, 11, 7:17 PM Like to know too, this is one of my issues with the LS1 swap. Really dont want to use a fuel cell or sump the stocker.
kballs Dec 25th, 11, 12:16 PM I'm on the same boat right now. Don't want to take up my trunk, and would like something all self contained. How would you know you're getting the newer style tank?
ed1le Dec 25th, 11, 12:30 PM Order directly from Spectra or if you order through somewhere like Summit, they ship directly from Spectra. Places like Amazon who have them in stock for under $400 are the older ones.
kballs Dec 25th, 11, 2:18 PM Thanks! Also do they now come with the proper 90 ohm senders? I only want to order this thing once. I'll do what you say though and deal with spectra direct if I go that route.
Rick's is a lot more money, and while it's a very nice piece, the fuel pump is inadequate for my build and they don't include a sending unit. So there's a few hundred extra on top.
ed1le Dec 25th, 11, 11:19 PM Here's the tank I'm looking at and you can search for other options via their ecatalog:
http://ecat.spectrapremium.com/produits/specifications/GM34BFI
From their listing: W/ two vent pipes; includes sender assembly with stock-capacity fuel pump 85-115 psi / 50-60 gph; (0-95 ohms); (45° flared fittings (sae) / threads 3/8 - 24)
kballs Dec 26th, 11, 2:33 PM That tank looks promising. I'd just need to put in a stronger pump. Here's the kicker for me. They're made in Canada, I live in BC 20min from their BC warehouse, but I can order it online from the USA for $150 less than anyone around here.
sparky502 Dec 27th, 11, 7:17 PM In regards to these spectra tanks would the spectra oem replacement work with the new Holley Avenger MPFI system? Is there a better option?
mt5425 Feb 8th, 12, 1:16 PM Will this tank fit a 70 Chevelle? the gm34bfi model. was told its for 68-69 only. Info??

Are you asking if a just a plain stock replacement gas tank will work with your new EFI system? The answer is absolutely not.
Will one of thes Spectra tanks with the in-tank fuel pump be a good idea for a regular carbed engine that requires an electric fuel pump? Is it necessary to have a fuel and return line? What about a regulator, should it be under the hood or can it be mounted at the leading edge of the tank?
Specifically a 1967 Chevelle. Street use, and not a monster motor.

x2 but i want to upgrade it with a better pump that can feed a 600 hp BB and return line.
I was planing to use a reg under the hood. Has looked at a couple of others solutions like the stealth tank from Ricks but still not sure what to do.
Anyone got pics for the spectra tanks for 64-67?
Marcus
aarroyo87 Mar 11th, 12, 10:57 PM It seems that ONE person has had better luck with the 3rd generation of gas tanks for EFI from Spectra. I'm still not convinced. I bought the 2nd generation tank thinking that they had fixed the fuel slosh problem but it did not.
Can any one else comment on the new updated versions? How low did the fuel get before it started to starve? Where did you buy the tank? Have you had experience with fuel starvation with previous tanks? Does this new tank have any of the symptoms gen 1 and gen 2 had? Are you able to take hard turns, hit some donuts, get sideways and all the fun type of driving that make a Chevelle a Chevelle?
etjr4life Mar 28th, 12, 12:13 PM FYI:
I just installed the new Spectra Premium GM34BFI on my '69 Chevelle with a LS-1 swap. This is a complete system with electric fuel pump, fuel sender, and OEM spec tank. There is no cutting involved and it bolts right up, just keep your straps or buy new ones. The set-up works great, they really did thier homework with this as for as the baffles and all that. I'm still in the trouble-shooting stage, but i think it's well worth it and its a lot cheaper than the other EFI tank kits.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Any pictures of the baffling in these tanks? The Spectra site doesnt give a whole lotta details on these tanks.
KMS396 Mar 28th, 12, 5:22 PM I have the old version which certainly has issues, and unfortunately Spectra seems to have all the tanks on backorder, with no idea of when they are getting more in.
Has anyone bought a new style recently, and where did you get it that had stock?

i want to see the new baffle too. Is it possible to take pictures? If you have your Chevelle runining, can you talk about your experience with fuel starvation when taking long sweeping turns, like getting on a freeway with 1/4 tank?
etjr4life Apr 11th, 12, 10:31 AM As of right now I don't have any pictures. Next time I drop the tank i'll, maybe this weekend, i'll take a few. I'm still not expericing any fuel starvation problems, thank God. So far so good!!

Just wondering where you purchased your fuel tank? If I buy one I want the latest style with the upgrades. I don't want one that has been in the system for a few years and is of the older style. Thanks
Rucumn May 6th, 12, 2:20 PM I'm in the market for a tank too! Need it soon, so what is the latest? Why can't a Spectra rep get on here and give us some updates, it would surely help their business.
Anyone use the latest version and test it on the autoX?
1989GTA May 6th, 12, 6:37 PM I got an email from Spectra say yes we have fixed the fuel problem. The way I see it there are probably to many of the old style in the warehouses. So how does one know they are getting the new style? I ask Spectra that question but did not get an answer. Plus the capacity of the fuel pump that comes with the tank is to small for the power I will be making. You cannot upgrade the fuel pump.
So what I am going to is get a new regular style gas tank and put a Tanks Inc fuel pump assembly in it. At least I know that combo works.

Thanks for the update. I think I will go the same route as you. I have a newer OEM tank already, so I will just buy that Tanks set up. Too bad Spectra didn't have better engineering and customer response because I think they would have a hold on the market if they could get their act together. I don't mind the fabrication, but it saves time just buying a drop in set up!
1989GTA May 8th, 12, 1:50 PM I agree. I would much rather have a Spectra bolt in tank if i knew everything was corrected. But that is not the case so we have to take other routes.

Yes you can, see my post:

You are correct. My statement was to the effect you cannot order that pump from Spectra already installed in their fuel tank. So that is another added cost to the Spectra fuel tank in swapping out fuel pumps. That is all I was trying to say and maybe not very clearly. ;)
