The LS7 I believe? I think it was something like the L88 with the extra 27ci?

I have read that a good stock crate, LS-7 was good for like 600+ hp with no more then a good set of four tube, long headers!! AND guy's say the 427 L-88 was good for 540 to 560 or so hp with headers too..

I honestly figure the LS-7 musta been scary to drive under full power at speed in a smaller car!!

where would you find the build specs for the ls7? has anyone recreated one?

In simplest form - LS7 454CI BBC, 4bolt main, forged crank, good GM 7/16" dimple rods, 12.5/1 CR., alum rec port heads, L88 solid cam. Really don't think it was anything exotic or special made parts. Chevy typically always built new engines by visiting the Parts bins and using existing tried and true parts.

LS-7 did not have the L-88 cam though. They had the ZL-1 solid lifter cam. I have seen these LS-7's at the track when you could get them over the counter. In a 70 Chevelle I seen one hitting low 11's and high 10's with big tube header, 4.56's and a 5000 stall converter. The motor was brutal for the time.

i know of a guy who has one that was in a 68 camaro. to bad the camaro is rotting away, and the engine is in my buddies garage, and he wants to get it out. i think it would look perfect in my 71. hehe.
thanks for the info on these engines, i never knew anything about them.

Many long years ago when I was a GM Parts guy the LS7 performance engines were factory rated at 465 hp. They worked real well, no good on pump gas after they took all the lead out. They were not 600 hp engines as delivered - but since when did you ever know a drag racer to stop with factory equipment smile.gif

Bomber,

ONLY a good set of headers woke both the stock L-88 and the LS7 right up and could add a 100 to 125 hp EASY when uncapped..

It's a known fact that no more then good headers on a Big Block is the cheapest way to more power b/c the exhaust manifolds generally choke them up pretty darn bad...
