I have both the cutting tools from comp for cutting the seat and valve guides. I cut the seats out but i can't figure out if i am cutting the guide right. It looks awful thin. Can anyone help me i could take pictures if need be.

With z springs they must be cut..

What cutter do you have, PN? or diameter .500 or .533 OD?

Jake,
With a Z spring most must be cut,, some have a smaller boss at the bottom & will accept them.

Comp's tool is .530 & I'm guessing he figured it out as he was asking where to buy seals in a different post. ;)

Are the newer ones machined different Mike?

Been a while since I did a set.

Or are the two different castings machined different?

I've been cutting them to .500, need to order a .530 cutter though.

I think it was just some of the earlier ones as the last few I bought had to be cut.
I'd say on most you are right they will need cutting.
You know GM,,, never say always :D

I bought vortec heads from SDPC back in 98, and those need to be cut as we speak using HD z28 springs.

Well,
What casting numbers do you guys have?

I think I worked with 062's, they were OEM heads not service replacement or over the shelf stuff.
This was before the Vortecs were popular, very little intake selection at the time.

I also did a set of 520's? 305 Vortecs..

They all needed cutting.

Wondering if the 906's? don't...

I did one set using Z springs and no damper coil inside.. worked great.

Wondering if they are machining them different now, or if it was luck of the draw, or a specific casting number got machined different..

I always laugh when I read you can't go more than .470 lift with Vortecs, etc..

The first set I did I used the Z springs, didn't have a cutter, it was a budget circle track build.
Used the positive VG seals, .525 gross lift mechanical cam, and it would clear with no lash, but BARELY...Figure .018 lash clearance smile.gif
