After reading the post on oil consumption it got me thinking?

When do you step up to the next oil weight?

I dont know for sure how many miles are on my engine. It uses about a quart every 500 miles give or take. Doesnt smoke and runs good. I am in los angeles so I see alot of stop and go traffic and drive a good 60 miles a day..

I have been running 10w-30 castrol syntec

oil 101 here...

so do you think 20w 50 would be better for mine or just stick to what im using? Would there be any benefits to switching.

The numbers are of the viscosity of the oil. Viscosity = a liquids resistance to flow. The rating means that it is a multi-viscous oil. Flows like 20W during the winter and 50 during the summer. I think thats fine. I run 10W50 in my Chevelle. Hasn't let me down at all. With the warm weather in LA, I stay stick with 20W50.

A quart of oil every 500 is a little much, but nothing incredible. And it doesn't smoke? Fouling plugs? Is it leaking anything?

No it doesnt smoke or foul the plugs. The plugs look normal.

It does leak a small bit but Its a small small ammount from the pan maybe a drop or two every now and then. This is a 383 so I was thinking maybe the heat fromt the stop and go traffic is causing it to consume more. Thats why I was thinking or trying 20w 50........
