Aluminum rods are lighter, steel rods are stronger. Aluminum rods are also traditionally larger because to get the same strength as a steel rod you need more material, so making sure they will fit is an issue.

With Aluminum rods you are limited to about 150 - 300ish passes down the track before you should change them, they do stretch with time.

Personally i kinda like 4340 steel rods. Thats just my taste though. http://www.catpep.com/Products/ProductDetail.asp?Part_Category_ID=6

P.S. Just wanted to mention that 4340 steel is the highest grade steel available to the public.
