I am installing a 454 into a 67 chevelle. I am not sure what the engine came out of but by the decoding it should be a 1974 I purchased a oil pan from GM that would fit a 1967 396. When I went to install the oil pump and pick up I found the replacement pick up (also ordered as a 67 396) it is half the size as the 454 screen what to do. I will check clearences etc before it is installed but I am concern the pump and screen is to small the last thing I want to do is pull the motor back out or have the motor blow up

In my 25+ years with Chevy's, I've not seen any major differences in factory/stock oil pickup tubes. They all are pretty much the same. It's hard to determine without seeing it, but I'm thinking the small one you have is not correct. I would try to find out if the tube that came with the pan is indeed the correct one. Go back to the dealer and ask for a 67 396 pickup tube and see what they give you.
