When i bought my chevelle the previous owner that i bought the car off of said that the origonal cam was replaced with another cam. He had no idea what kind of cam was put in it since he did not replace it.(i think he said it MIGHT be a mild cam??) My dad and i think that this might be the reason the car is running rougher than it should. I would like to put an origonal cam back into my 283 that has the same lift as what it came with from the factory. Can anyone tell me what the kind of cam the 283's came with??

Thanx, Jared.

Well 283's in the various years had several different cams. The 1957 - mid 1958 hyd cams were very small.

.334 valve lift
174 dur @ .050

The mid 1958 - mid 1966 had a larger single pattern
hyd..

.398 lift
196 dur @ .050

The mid 1966 and later 283's all had the 929 cam.

.390/.410
195/202 dur @ .050

The hi perf solid lifter 283's of 1957-1961 had the 097 Duntov cam.

.386/.400
287/287
228/231 dur @ .050
lashed @ .012/.018

Imho, please consider no more then the -929 cam either with your stock 1.5 ratio rockers or with 1.6 ratio rockers for a little more power everywhere or the cheap, generic "Performer" cam at 270/204/280/214, 112/107, .420"/.442" lift.

The "Performer" cam is Summits SUM-K1102 cam and lifter package at something like $80.. IMHO a great buy..

AND I ran the great little-bitty, -097 Duntov solid cam in my junk 301 for quite a while AND beat on her hard!!

BUT she won't have much go until she hit's about 3000 rpm, then HANG ON til the points bounce or the valves float if your stock springs aren't up to it!! (I used the good old Z- or -142 springs and never floated my valves)..

Back again, a very good head for the little motor is no more then the 305HO, -601 heads!!

I am putting a set on my 283 b/c the chambers are small to keep the compression up on the little motor, they have hardened seats for unleaded gas use AND the ports are in the 158+ cc range and they have good double-hump shaped chambers!!

A heck of a deal for little motors to me!!

One of my heads cc'ed at 53 and 54 cc's for two chambers and above 160 cc's for two intake ports!!!

WAS I HAPPY!!! pdq67
