Was setting total advance on my dist for 32* total. Anyway the timing goes up to about 35* then drops back to 32 and settles there as the rpm goes higher. This is all at about 3000rpm with vacuum off. What would cause it to do this?
Thanks

I was having problems w/ my HEI (would not time, just like yours), and noticed by accident that the mechanical advance had frozen in the main shaft. Another vehicle I had was having quality idle problems, and that one, too, was sticking. I now disassemble and service my distributors every few years to prevent timing-related failures. Though I have found that since I began using Amsoil racing synthetic grease on the shaft, my problems have gone away.

My .02.

The centrifugal weights could be hanging up on notches on their pivot pins/posts. Are the little plastic bushings worn, and are the pivot posts worn?
