: How long to do firmware update on Holley HP ECU??
blue66 May 14th, 11, 5:08 PM Hooked up laptop, downloaded a baseline cal. did tps cal. All good.
Thought I'd update firmware. Downloaded firmware from Holley site. THen went into the sync dropdown and into update firmware,
box comes up and says sending BAM header it has been there for about a 1/2 hr now. Doesn't let you go anywhere else, looks like maybe a bar should come across showing progress, but nothing happening, yet............
THanks, any help appreciated!
Not sure if normal or something is stuck.

64duece May 14th, 11, 7:08 PM about 2 mins.....haven't had one lock up yet. Need to use the latest software to download the firmware...what versions are you using?
blue66 May 14th, 11, 9:17 PM Software Version 1.1.9 Build 3.
Tried to update firmware to Version HEFI_0348.eep -
Noticed there was a HEFI_0333 file so I tried that one and it loaded (about 2 mins) and everything works again. So I don't know what happened but it wouldn't load the 0348 version.
I guess maybe I should delete the 0348 file and redownload it and see if it works?
blue66 May 14th, 11, 11:31 PM So at this point I am sync'd. Crank engine and get only a spark off the coil
about once per 2 crank revolutions. 1 spark per dist. revolution.
It reads about 140rpm while cranking.
If I ground the white trigger wire to the msd digital 6 box it sparks
mechanically.
When I hook the white wire to the white ecu wire, I get 1 spark per
revolution.
I double checked my wiring.
From dist. yellow cam signal to pin B.
Brown crank to pin A
red to pin E
Black to pin D. chassis grd.......there are also ecu grd's for the cam/crnk
wiring, but I wouldn't think that would matter as long as the hall effect is
grounded. This was how your adapter was wired, so I kept it to pin D.
I checked for 12v when the cam and crank led's were lit on the corresponding
wires and that checks out.
I am using custom Ign calibration.
The single pulse/spark,
50* crank signal
rising
same for cam
:confused::confused:
I am lost right now as to why I don't have proper spark?
Any thoughts?
64duece May 15th, 11, 9:40 AM Hmmmm that is strange.
Early XFI Dual syncs are grounded through the distributor base so the cam/crank sync needs to go through chassis ground not cam/crank ground. Do not change this...ECU damage can result!
Did you install following the FAST instructions and go past the first crank LED to the second Crank LED? Send me a cranking datalog via email
Try disable the cam sync and try bank/bank and let me know what your spark out looks like. Send me that log aswell.
blue66 May 15th, 11, 10:06 AM I just rechecked and I am getting 1 spark from the coil every 2 revolutions of the distributor, not 1 revolution of the distributor. Not sure if that helps at all.......
Followed instructions went to 2nd crank signal.
Pontiac dist turns backwards, but I would think fast instructions would acct for that?

blue66 May 15th, 11, 2:35 PM I noticed when manually triggering the msd, I culd hear the fuel pump relay click on and off for the prime.......like the ecu was resetting......I hooked the coil wire to a spark plug and all issue went away. The ECU must have been picking up interference from the spark directly off the coil wire. Now with a spark plug on the coil wire, I have all kinds of fire while cranking at that plug. Jeesh, hope thats it....
Doug F. May 16th, 11, 12:32 AM Not sure what you were doing, but don't fire a raw coil or cap output into anything but a grounded plug. You can possibly damage things.

Waiting for gas tank to get back, thought I'd configure ECU and check for ignition operation. Check all wiring/relay operations, etc. Had coil wire 1/4" away from ground like I usually do.
But I now know this is not a wise thing to do. (firing a raw coil output without a spark plug)
