Anybody have this combo and how do you like it as far as first gear and final drive?

My personal opinion is first gear will be too low, the equivalent of a close ratio 4 speed (2.2) and a 5.70 rear end. That is almost useless on the street.

Overdrive:
with 29" tires:
55 MPH 1800 RPM
65 MPH 2150 RPM
75 MPH 2500 RPM

with 26" tires:
55 MPH 2000 RPM
65 MPH 2400 RPM
75 MPH 2800 RPM

All speeds and RPM approximate.

pay attention to their comments about picking the right combination of transmission and rearend ratios to fit the engine build and intended use.

Forget that 1st gear with that rear end--- Just my 2 cents.

700R4 and 3.42, about right. forget the 4.11, no good.

3.73s + 700r4 + 26" tall tires=2nd gear before reaching halfway through an intersection.

Forget the 700-R4.

Use a 200-4R.

Much better for numerous reasons.

I knew it was a crazy thought but needed to hear it from you guys.I was thinking what Tom was saying about the 3.42 gears but not sure if it would be worth doing because I have 3.08 now.To bad a gearset from a 03 truck 8.6 10 bolt wont fit a car 12 bolt because I have a good used 3.42 ring and pinion.

I run 4.10's with a 700R4 and a 275/60-15 tire.

Love it!!!!

Torque converter locked at 60 mph around 2100 rpms.

I wouldn't want my engine to run any lower .

With the cam it has in it 244 @ 050 running it lower than 2000 rpms on the highway makes it really chug.

I have a 468 in my 70 SS 454 Sta. Wgn. ( 4400 Lbs. ) with a 700R4.
Started out with a 10 bolt 3:08. my 700 has a 3:06 first gear.
Mash the gas and it will burn tire all day. After two years with the 3:08, I went to a 12 bolt and a 3:07. At 73 MPH. the engine is turning 1950 RPMs. and 19.7 MPG. on the I-State. NO it aint a racer!
It is just a driver and since 2003 it has been driven 33000 miles with the same 700R4. It will make the drive AGAIN (3-4Times) to Goodlettsville then to Ohio,=Woodard Cruise then Can AM in Canada
Same gears with the 396 it got 21 MPG. With the price of gas, Is my 3:07 getting yanked out ??...... He!! No.:noway:

For performance 3:31 or 3:42 dont get TOOOOOO DEEP. Remember " Like some others have said " First gear is like low range in a four wheel drive.

I did look at a gear speed calculator online yesterday before starting this thread and with the 4.10 gears and my tire size which is a 235 60 15 it looked good.First gear at 5500rpm was 35mph and 70 was 2500rpm.And my cam likes it above 2k when cruising so it looked good but don't think the calculator takes into account converter slippage and I have a none lock up converter.I had this current drive train and wheel tire combo in another car with a 10 bolt 3.73 rear and it was good.Do remember first gear winding out quick.Don't remember the highway rpms but it was a big improvement when the 700 was installed over the t350.Also 5500rpm in final is calculated at 155mph which does make it seem like the perfect gear.

I had a 4l60e with 3:73's on my last Camaro and could barely take off without burning the tires.

Greetings from Arizona
I have 69 Camaro, 350 crate, 700r4, 3:31's. Been on road about 3 years...love it, mid 14's 1/4 mile.
Wife, BJ, has 67 Elcamino, 345 k car, was 283 w powerglide, w 10 bolt 2:75 gears (?) i put in built 327 w built turbo 350 last year, ran good but it wasn't rear cruiser like she wanted, it ate the cam, so we did engine again, and put in 700r4, w 12 bolt and 3:31's its truly a driver again, and will move out when needed, been on road 2 weeks or so,
My friend Mike has 66 Chevyll with 383, 700r4,4:11 gears, turns 12's, and still can run on freeway. Jay

Now I'm thinking a 3.90 would be the way to go so I can use a series 3 carrier and If I don't like them can go back to a lower gear later.

Easier to quote than re-type the same thing.....

Your question didn't mention tire size and I think a lot of people just assumed 26". That would make 4.10s a bad choice but with a 28" tall tire (275/60R15 is most common), it's a ncie combo.

Totally agree.

A 700-R4 would be the last OD tranny to waste a combo on, unless it was a totally torque-less limp dog-biscuit engine, like a worn out 194 c.i. 6-cyl.

And even then, it'd have to be free w/free installation, a $500.00 gas card and a set of tires. ;)

The 200-4R reigns supreme w/no close second, in ease of install, gear ratios and price range. :hurray:

I had 3:31's with a 700R. I was turning 2200rpm's @70mph Changed to 3:73's turning 2500rpm's @70mph It's alot more responsive. I think I'm going to be happy with this combo.;)

3.42-3.55 gear is mint.
3.90 still a little too much...
IMHO and experience, steep gear is over rated for most street driven combos

I took the wifes Elcamino out to Phil's house today to inspect some wheels he had for sale...approx 100 miles round trip. 1st long haul since new motor, 700r4 with 12 bolt 3:31's. the reason I love my overdrive....20 mpg  Jay

I have this same combo in my 70, it is the perfect set up for my car.

4.10s with your short tires would suck IMO.

'70 coupe with 383 stroker, 6-71 blower, th-350 (beefed up), 4-11 posi., Nitto 275 X 60 X 15 drag radials, very little drag time, 50 mph / 2500 rpm. I'm going to a 700-4r, I sure hope the overdrive helps with cruising, 2500 is just to much.:noway:

Choose your gear around your cam not your "ideal cruising rpm"...or chang the cam.

Drove a few cars with 27+28 in tall tires build sbc/BBC 4.11 700r.
Sticky tire and a converter can you spell launch!!!

2500rpm cruise spd should be the minimum with a hot cam.
Thats really not much in the way of rpm

We get spoiled by these quiet late model cars that loaf at 1700 in OD...they are built for it. These old carbd/cammed motors not so much.

MPG or performance take your pick.

Yeh, you are all burning the tires with that great 3.07 1st, and when you hit 2d. it's like someone stuffed a potato up the exaust.

700R-4's work great with wimpy small blocks with no torque. But for big blocks on the street, unloading 500+ ft lbs on the tires with that low of a first is a exersize in futility with that big gap between 1st abd 2d.
