Can anyone tell me or link me to some information on different HP options for the 327 in the 1967 Chevelle/Malibu. What are the recognizable differences in the higher HP options from the 275 horsepower standard model? Any pictures would also be appreciated.

Thanks everybody....

Other than the 275hp version the only other version available was the 325hp version. You can spot one of those a mile away due to the chrome fuel lines, valve covers and chrome lidded open element air cleaner.

Oh, and the oil fill tube, cap and dipstick handle are chrome too.

Pictures? Here are a few snaps of one of the best '67 L79 in the country, bar none. This one happens to also have the California smog equipment (not all did). The picture of the dirty engine is an unrestored engine but without smog.

Thanks Rich !!! That's exactly what I was looking for!!! That pretty much clears things up for me. Basically what it boils down to is this:
I have a 95% original, numbers matching, same ol' same ol', run of the mill, gutless little 275 HP, about as common as you can get, bolero red, Chevelle. Don't get me wrong, I love the ol' girl, but I'm beginning to feel a STRONG need for a 4 speed, SS 396 or 427 car. I think I'd rather put all my unemployment checks into something a little less common and a whole lot
faster!!! I got bowtie fever real bad, and I hope there's no cure.........

Z-man, That 275hp/327 was/is a great engine.
In 67 Chevy installed it in the Corvette and raited it at 300hp with Holly carb and rams horn exhaust.
The 325hp was a 4 speed only option.

Rich, I assume that hose attached to the oil filler tube is a crankcase vent. Where does the other end attach? A fitting on the intake, or the carb?

Thanks,
Mike

No doubt the 327 IS a great engine. I just can't justify taking away THIS cars originality and building it to suit my needs.I don't know why I feel this way cuz it's probably the most common velle on the road, next to the 283, but regardless I'll probably never get rid of it, cuz I do love this car. I just wanna get something that has more power. One for cruising/ one for DRIVING/RACING/SHOWING - whatever. I've had this car for just over a year now and was impressed with th V-8 power at first, (after driving 4 and 6 cylinders for the past ten years)
but now it bores me. I'm sure you all understand my dilemma. I'm ready to take the next small step toward the ultimate and final goal- TOP FUEL baby!

Thanks,
Mike There is a PCV valve at the oil fill tube. The hose routes to the carb base I believe.

In 1967 in the Chevelle when the L79 was ordered a heavy duty 3-speed manual was standard. The 4-speed was optional. I've never seen one with anything but a 4-speed but apparently it was possible. I doubt the three speed manual was available in the Corvetter however.

Wasn't that 325hp/327 just the 350hp/327 L-79 engine with a cast-iron intake and Q-Jet on it???

If it is, it's one heck of a runner if you can find fuel to feed her!!!!!pdq67

I have a 68 L79 motor(cast iron manifold/quadrajet) in my 67 Malibu, runs great on Sunoco 94, no problems 93. Every once and while I put "cam2" gas in it, really cooks  . Z - man, 327 malibu are far and few between, porbably more big block 67 chevelles running around then 327s.

If it is, it's one heck of a runner if you can find fuel to feed her!!!!!pdq67 You are confusing the '67 and '68 L79. The '67 L79 still had a Holley carb and aluminum intake. The '68 L79 had a cast iron intake and a Q-Jet carb.

The only reason the horsepower rating was dropped from 350hp in 65/66 to 325hp starting in 67 was political and marketing since the engine mechanically was exactly the same as in previous years. However, Chevrolet couldn't have a small block available in the Chevelle that had a higher horsepower rating than their entry-level big block (396ci/325hp) so they arbitrarily dropped the rating of the L79 to 325hp. Of course the very same L79 in Corvettes was still rated at 350hp in 1967 and the few that made it into '67 Chevy IIs were also rated a 350hp.

Well now I really am confused. Love my '64 El C, but also my '67 PU with optioned 327/TH350. According to my shop maual the '67 PU did not come with a 327, but there it is, in the truck and on the option sheet. When it needed a new starter the '67 PU starters did not fit the bolt pattern on the engine block. The only stater bolt pattern that fit was for the Corvette 327. I have heard rumors that this was an available option on the PU. Can anyone confirm this? If so, is it in fact the 350hp engine?? How can I determine the truth of the matter?
