I am looking to install a new stereo in my 66 convertible. The previous owner put 6" round speakers in the side panels but they are about half covered by the rear seat. While this looks like the best idea for the rear seat area does anyone have a better idea, one that will work with the top down.

That's a great question. I hope someone can post pics of something that looks nice.
I haven't driven my convertible yet, can the stereo be heard through the dash speakers?

Have you considered the original 66-67 style mounted to the back of the seat, I have them in my 66 convertible with a factory AM/FM multiplex. They are definitely quieter with the top down but you can still hear them

No I have not. By chance can you post some pictures so I can check them out. This seems to be a difficult thing. I am not looking to take up all the space in my trunk, but want some thing that is fuctionable and can be heard while driving down the road with the top down. Thanks.

My friends '71, we put some 6x8" speakers from my Explorer on a very thin plywood panel that fit between the seatback and the support, along with the stereo dash pad.
Top up, it sounds ok, the radio is a Custom Autosound, which to my ears sounds like a cheap Kraco unit. Top down the radio doesn't have the power to drive it loud enough to compensate for high speed wind/road noise.
We installed the speakers there as we didn't want to cut up panels and wanted a stock look, yet still have 4 speakers.

The previous owner of my car had some 6x9s in the side panels. I junked them and put a Boston component set in there. Planning on making a plate to mount them on and put a baffle on the back the next time it rains. Here are a couple pics with the old seats in.

Thanks for the pictures. anybody else have some pictures of thier convertibles with speakers in the back. Also what did you do for the front speakers? not sure if I want them in the door but do not want to give up the vent in the kick panels.

Previous owner had also butchered the metal behind the kick panel and these tiny speakers fit in there, more or less. Planning on getting some new kick panels though since this was poorly executed and I'd like better speakers.

You might want to reconsider the battery mount too………

Here are some speakers I put in for a AM/FM stereo multiplex unit in my 66. The rear speakers are just generic 6x9's. The fronts I got from Hinshaw's as factory replacements for 66. I think they were about $60 for the pair. To be correct I think they should be vertical on the kick panels but they look fine for a clone.
