I have a 1969 Chevelle 396 with a loud ticking noise which increases when the clutch is depressed. The clutch is 3 years old. New throwout bearing put in two weeeks ago but this noise started a year ago and disapeared until this year. I reduced the RPMs to 800, for some reason they had gone to 1100 which is obviously way too high and the noise became more of a knocking sound from the rear of the drivers side valve cover. I have had 20 different opinions on this problem over the past few months but now am at the point of going into further into the clutch or first checking out the lifters. The noise can be heard from outside the car and is so load that someone at the Carcraft show yelled out adjust that lifter. So, can lifter noise be transmitted into the passenger compartment when depressing the clutch? It seems to me that this is a lifter problem rather than a Clutch problem.
Any opinions? I did a search under the lifter subject and nothing fits this one. By the way the car runs perfectly. 18000 miles on a rebuild.
