When I look at parts in the Summit catalog, a lot of times it will state for pre 76 long water pump motors, or 76 & newer long water pump motors.

My motor is a long water pump, but I don't know what year it started out as...

I assume that I can look on the block somewhere - where, and is it visible while in car, etc?

It's the way the power steering pump bolts up, threaded or through hole.

Behind the alternator where the cyl. head meets the block there is a flat spot where they stamp the I.D the 2 or 3 letters are what you need to identify what it is.

Rod,
The blocks really are not different, just the water pumps. If you know you need a long water pump, then get a long one.

Ther's at least two different long water pumps, one has the power steering pump mount hole threaded (3/8x16), the other has a larger diameter hole with no threads, a 3/8" through bolt goes through and threads into a nut (3/8x16) welded onto the P/S pump bracket.

Several times I've ended up drilling out the threaded style for the through bolt. Sometimes the cars don't have the right year brackets on them.
