i left the old filter gasket on and screwed on the new filter. filled it with 5 quarts of mobil 1. started it up. ran it for about 30 seconds and turned it off becuase the oil light was on. lost about 3.5 quarts of oil on the floor. remedied the situation. started her up. seemed to run with out a problem, just like it always did.
think anything is damaged? what should i look out for?
i won't do that again !

I doubt your engine even noticed. You were using Mobil1, still had some oil and shut it down right away.

I agree, highly doubtful you hurt anything in 30 seconds with no load.

thanks guys.
i just wanted to make sure.
i do pour some oil in the filter and around the gasket before i install it, but i think since the car sits so long (i only change the oil twice per year spring and fall)the gasket must of stuck.
makes me feel better - thanks guys

I only lost about 2 quarts when it happened to me. The worst part was trying to get it cleaned up before the "war department" found out!
