Well I am getting all the parts together for my 383 build. I am wondering what would be better for the 383, an internal or external balance? I'll be using a 400 crank.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Mine's external. I suggest a Fluid Dampener.

My 383 was only externally balanced initially,
when I re-did it over winter, I spent the bucks and had it internally balanced, seems much smoother !!!

my .02

Eks,
If you are using a GM crank, it will probably cost in the area of $500 to internally balance it. I really do not see any big advantage for 99% of engines. If it is balance correctly, I also do not think it will be any smoother running either way.
