: Power Top or Manual Top?

What do most people prefer? Just wondering if a power top was worth the extra cost? I have a power, but a buddy has a manual he would swap if I wanted to. What would you do?

If I could get one of those scooters free from the scooter store Id get one so I wouldn't have to walk so much..So ya I like having a power top and If my bud said he would swap his manual top if I wanted Id say I bet you would. Is this a real question or am I on candid camera?

Lots of people convert their manual top cars to power.
Not once have I ever heard of anybody doing the opposite.

I'm having the same debate. My 70 was originally a manual top car. I bought a power top for it, but still don't have all the other parts to make it work which would be another $1100 plus I'd have to drill a hole in the dash for the switch. I'm leaning towards keeping it a manual top.

Tom,
When I purchased my '67 ragtop it was in the manual mode but set up for the power. ( ie: pistons, tubing and motor were all there but shot ). I disconnected the pistons so that it was more manual and it took two people to raise the top correctly. It was a pain in the butt. I replaced all the parts and love the fact that now I press a button and up it comes, especially if I am riding with it down and it starts to rain. My vote would always be for the power. You will forget about the cost in no time.

I'm in the middle of a rotisserie resto on my 69 SS Convertible
which was originally a manual top. I gave it about 5 minutes of
thought before I was making a template to cut the bow tie shape
hole out of my bezel for the power top switch. I couldn't see doing
all that work without upgrading, besides the fact that it looks cool
going up or down by power and does add a little more class to your
car, imo.

I am guessing you have a '68... Not 100% sure for 68-72, but for the 64-67, there's more to it than just the pump, hoses and rams/pistons. the FRAME is different (different linkage for power versus manual top)...

So Its not an easy swap anyway, unless you want to remove the canvas and start swapping parts...

Power top will also add more value to the car, should you ever decide/need to sell...

It's a 68 and I just wondered what the various opinions ranged from.

My 69 has a manual top and I like it like that. It only takes one person to raise or lower it. If speed is an issue I can be latching mine while you wait for the motor to bring yours up, either way you have to remove the boot.
I agree the power top would probably add value to the car if that is a concern for you.

I had 2 frames sitting side by side in my driveway, one was manual, one was power, the only difference I saw was one had rams, the other had springs. I picked the manual frame because it was in better shape, I was then told that I could not put power options to a manual top....after I had put frame and canvas on car...needles to say I was mad at myself for not checking. but ...
no-one has been able to show or tell me the difference between the two frames, I have assembly manuals, I have called convertible top parts suppliers,no-one knows .... so I added rams and a pump ,cut hole in dash....works perfect..top rarely if ever goes up anyway...:hurray:

Not understanding why you would want to go from a power top to a manual one?? I can see the other way around.
Kind of like taking power windows out, to install crank ones!!!
