storm Feb 15th, 04, 8:26 PM sorry... do you have any experience
doggy69 Feb 15th, 04, 8:30 PM Looks like an ok deal compression seems low. It'll work fine if the horsepower numbers are real. Remember a Chevelle is a big car and torque moves big cars. Id ask them to send me a dyno sheet and look at torque curves and where it peaks look for a good spread between peak torque and peak hp that means a well designed engine.
Wally Feb 15th, 04, 8:38 PM You can do as good on the east coast and save same money.
BillK from Advanced Automotive can work you up a price and he's in Maryland.
301-843-5700 is his number.
storm Feb 15th, 04, 9:27 PM wally thanks for his number i really dont know crap about engines im a bodyman so i think this is a good site to double check before i buy. i was looking at the gm crate motors 350 deluxe complete but my son wants some more hp. so can anyone give me some idears? looking for something complete carb dist flex plate etc . if someone close to new jersey would be great i can pick it up.but i will call that number thanks keep the replys coming thanks storm
Ralph67 Feb 15th, 04, 9:52 PM Buy a crate gm 502 or call shafiroff. spelling?
storm Feb 15th, 04, 10:15 PM haha im not trying to spend 10000000000$ on the engine im just looking for something around 3 or 4 thousand $
mr 4 speed Feb 15th, 04, 10:29 PM I built my 490 HP/525 ft/lbs TQ 454 for $2500 :D
I'd rather buy a crate motor from the General than buy that 383..talk to a good machine shop-give the good local guy the business..building a good motor isn't rocket science,..you just have to know exactly what you want and be honest with your goals..mine was to have a 12 second car w/a big block and 2.73's in the rear..not too hard to achieve.
BTW, that seller has 0 feedback..probably a trouble seller w/a different name..lots of junk out there..be careful!
storm Feb 15th, 04, 10:35 PM wow 2500 is that from scracth or did u have an engine that he rebuilt? and give me the guys number hahaha ill give him a call
BillsCamino Feb 15th, 04, 10:44 PM A couple of issues here...
What gearing/stall is in your Chevelle now?
Without the right setup, that motor will be a slug around town.
IMO...as Chris mentioned, the price is too high.
I've built three SB 355/383 project motors in the past 18 months and none cost near that much.
Second... mismatched combo. Too much head and cam for too little CR. Seriously doubt that HP rating. Probably not even a 4 bolt block (not mentioned).
Last...also as Chris noted, there is NO previous feedback on this seller...BEWARE!
mr 4 speed Feb 15th, 04, 10:51 PM Storm,$2500 is not the norm unless you know what to look for and do the assembly yourself..its kind of an extreme comparison, but still a valid one..I bought the parts, and my machinist did all the machine work, balancing, etc.
storm Feb 15th, 04, 10:51 PM well anyone want to build me a good big strong HP engine lol any takers?
storm Feb 15th, 04, 10:59 PM im going to put in 373 or 308 for the stall and transmission i have a nephew who works in a tranmission shop and we can put together what we need he told me to first get the motor . storm
Leithal396 Feb 17th, 04, 12:28 PM I would look into buying a big block to put in your car. It's a heavy car and the torque you get from a big block is awesome. I just rebuilt my 396 in my 70 chevelle ss. I'll never own a small block car again. Good luck.
