guys,
can a new engine consume 2 quarts of oil in 200 miles? without leaving a smokey trail, without dripping. everything is clean on the outside.
is this normal for a new motor? could this be rings seating?
or bad valve guides/seals? or something else?
thanks!!!

That's an awful lot of oil to be going thru. GM assumes 1 quart in 1000 miles is ok, especially with a new motor, but I would think if you're using 10 quarts in 1000, it's got to be showing up somewhere. Keep us posted!

a local builder here said that if a leak in the valve seals is small enough, it can drip down there and burn and not be enough to smoke or turn blue.
he says to check oil and take records and drive it hard to help the rings seat. the motor is a built 468 with about 2-300 miles on it.
he said his best mechanic worked on it and never forgets to put oil back in anything. they were doing some tranny work and checked the oil.
what do you guys think?
thanks!

that is alot of oil it's got to smoke like a frieght train, run her on the freeway 55 65 75 help brake her in diferent speeds, diferent rpms, and recheck the oil, keep your fingers crossed the level was never topped off, if she drinks much more oil take her back. valve guide seals or rings are the problem. good luck...

yeah, thats just what im doing. every shop has a "best mechanic" but they are still humans who can make mistakes... 2 quarts low for 200 miles... whats that gonna do to my car?
thanks
As long as you had proper oil pressure, nothing...

thats how i caught the problem... i looked at my gauge and noticed 20-30 psi at all times... even at 3000. when i revved, it would go up and suck the pan dry and then drop back down.
it was never zero though...
