: would you re-use low mile pistons?

OK, heres what I've got.

I have a 350 4-bolt engine that I got from a dumptruck at work. Our mechanic says that the engine has less than 10k miles on the rebuild and when I tore it apart all the internals look like he is right. The crank in this engine broke right behind the front cap. It looks like it may have been cracked as the break is very clean to about halfway through the jounal.
This is the engine that I was going to use to build a 383 for my Chevelle.

Now, I have the original virgin 350 out of Amyes Z28 which had wiped several cam lobes. I decided to go ahead and do a complete rebuild on it as it has 107K on it and I am a little weary about the cam lobe particles runnin through all the internals.

OK, now here is where I need help.
The pistons out of the first engine are flat tops and in great shape, but, they are .040 over.
Would it be possible or feasible to have the virgin engine from Amye Z bored .040 and use these pistons with new rings or am I just asking for trouble.
I am on a low budget for the Z28 rebuild so this would help a lot if possible to do.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for any advice.

if they are really in great shape and are nice forged or hyper pistons from a respected manufacturer I wouldn't be afraid to reuse them. if they are cheap cast pistons of questionable quality I would toss them in the trash.

I'm not sure of the manf. but they are cast pistons. The only markings I can find are the numbers 1753 cast on the inside of the skirts.

Probably a case of spending a dollar to save a dime.

It just seems a shame not to use them, but, I would hate to tear her down a second time if they did'nt hold up.

Thanx

Measure them or give them to an engine builder
to have checked. He will tell you if they are ok
to reuse or not.
My opinion FWIW, if they check out and are within factory service specifications and there are no cracks dings or scuffing going on, put them in. New rings of course.

Will the pin placement be right for a 383?

The pin placement will be right ONLY if you use the shorter SB400 rods.

I'd use them - just double check the side clearance on the rods since they'll be put with another block/crank.
