: Which UD cam?

Hello, wondering which cam I should be shooting for. Car would see primarily street duty but I definitely want as much power as possible and still be able to have enough vacuum to run power brakes and steering. Seems the Ultradyne cams are the favourite in design. Have considered the COMP Extreme Energy 268/280 but not sure if the 110LSA is too much...Any advice appreciated!

No matter how big the cam is,you don't have to worry about it affecting power steering http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
For your gears/tranny,I'd use the Ultradyne 280/288 .525/.550 112 LSA
I run this cam myself in a +.030 454 with 215 heads (2.06/1.72) with about 10.6 to 1 compression(.100 dome,.008 deck clearance,.039 head gasket).Excellent cam, can't tell where the power starts or ends, just pulls like a freight train.Has a slight lope at idle, could almost pass for stock with the idle turned up to about 850-900 in gear IMO.Pulls 16-17" vacuum too,but I'm sure it will be less in a smaller motor.I'm only running 2.73's w/a TH400...ET in signature http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif And thats just shifting at 5000-5200 rpms and crossing the stripe at only 4000 rpms (because of the 2.73's)
And its really just a street car.I'm only going to track to have some fun.

Bad67SS, I have the identical 396 combo as you listed except mine is .060 over, a 750 Qjet carb, and stock exhaust manifolds.

I wanted a cam that would give a good, non-lopey idle, as much lift as possible, yet give me around 400 HP at the flywheel.
I also wanted excellent street manners running a TH400/2400 stall and 3.55 gears.
I decided on a Crane 278H Powermax with a wide 114 LSA. I have not fired the engine yet so I can't report on power, etc.

I originally wanted the CompCams XE268H-10 until I got feedback from those who used them and said they clatter like a solid, that was enough for me.

Good luck! Charles

Charles, their clatter is worse than a solid. Solids have a nice, gentle tappity tappity sound. XE's have a slamming sound. At least to my "solid cam" ear.

Chris's cam in a hydraulic, or the 276/284 in a solid flat tappet. More power with the solid cam, but more maintenance and potentially heavier springs, better rockers.
