: Welcome me to EFI
blue66 Feb 24th, 11, 2:53 PM Well, just got off the phone with Dennis Moore from Moore Racecraft again.
Ordered a universal HP EFI kit.
Dual sync distributor and adapter harness.
Will be sequential MPFI, individual cylinder fuel and timing control.
Injectors sized to engine and nitrous kit for a dry shot.
Will be sitting atop a Edelbrock supervictor EFI ready intake.
Not a chevelle project here, but a 68 GTO.
A little history......I built my buddies 505ci poncho last year.
It is an aftermarket block all forged unit.
Butler Performance race port Edelbrock heads, 10.5:1 compression,
244/248 .630 lift 112lsa comp hyd. roller cam. Morel lifters.
This is backed by a full billet 2004r trans, 9.5" edge converter, and a 12 bolt with 3.73's.
I estimate horsepower around 620-650, then we are going to spray 150 at it. Should put a smile on his face since I had the throttle set up at about 3/4 travel last fall when we got it together........Time to wake it up this spring:D
As this progresses I'll try to get some pics up and provide feedback on the Holley EFI. I am real excited about the conversion and am worried I will want it on my chevelle!!
Roadknee Feb 24th, 11, 3:42 PM No need to worry. You WILL want it on your Chevelle. You're involved with a really cool project there.
Stan Dennett Feb 24th, 11, 3:55 PM The higher gas gets, the more EFI units you'll be seeing.
Bought my last carb, for sure!
Holley EFI ahead!
Al510 Feb 24th, 11, 4:10 PM Sounds like a good project, what was the reasoning with going with the super vic over the victor jr? I am undecided for my 496 EFI.

It is a pontiac application and the EFI manifolds are labled goofy.....The super victor EFI is more like a victor and the victor EFI is a duplicate of a torker 2. I have no idea why edelbrock would change the name on the manifolds like they did. Makes no sense!
540Hotrod Feb 24th, 11, 6:23 PM You're going to be very happy with it. I still get a kick out of reaching over the door and hitting the key when it's dead cold and having it fire up and idle like a new pickup!
My buddies all just stand and stare!
Plus it ain't no power slouch either!

Yes, I can't wait to see it in action. I am more worried that I will be spending a pile of $$ on my own car after I get this installed on the goat, LOL. Except I'd be putting in the 4l80E I have and using the dominator ECU to control that too.
I love how the power adders are integrated in and I will be using 1 fuel pump and 1 fuel feed line to do everything. And once I set it up, it's dialed in for good......No sticking floats, no "experts" tweaking on it etc. :D
kjett Feb 25th, 11, 3:43 PM Good luck with the project and keep us posted, Brian. I think you'll really like working with the EFI. I hear the Holley has a really nice user interface, too. I love it on my car. I would be hard pressed to go back to a carb at this point. The tuning possibilties are nearly endless.

Ken what fuel tank did you use? I think it will be a real cool deal to work with....I downloaded the software alreay and have been playing with it

I'm running a tank from Rick's Hot Rod. It is a stainless steel "stealth" series tank. It has an aeromotive A1000 pump and filter built inside the tank. Makes for a really clean installation, but I will tell you it's SUPER HEAVY. The tank without any fuel weighs about 70lbs! I had to sent mine back to have some additional ventilation installed in the tank. Prior to that it was blowing fuel out of the air vent when it was hot outside. The were great to deal with. They paid for ALL the repairs as well as shipping in both directions. You can't really ask for more than that. Since then it works perfectly.

Does the gauage and everything work properly? Have you ever had any fuel starvation issues or anything like that?
I have been looking at Ricks stealth tank and rock valleys.....They have a little different setups.
It looks like the position of the sender would not allow for an accurate gauge for the fuel level?

I haven't put a ton of miles on the car since I put the tank in, but it seems to read pretty acurately. Once I get it back on the road I'll do some measurements at various tanks levels to see how the gauge is reading.
blue66 Feb 28th, 11, 9:22 PM Just ordered a Ricks Tank, he is now using the Stealth upright A1000 with built in filter.
And reassured me that we will have no fuel control problems. I asked him about the Vaporworks and he said it was a great setup but felt the A1000 with engine mounted regulator was the better choice for our setup. Upgraded the fuel sender, and said he would do any additional baffling needed to ensure fuel control. I'll get some pics of the newest version of the Ricks tank setup when it arrives, as the pics on his website are not current.

Interesting information, Brian. Are you working with Hector? They are constantly trying to improve their products, and I really like that approach. I got one of the earlier units and (as I mentioned earlier) it had a problem with ventilation. They fixed that problem no questions asked. I haven't been down the track with this tank, so I don't know if I will have fuel starvation issues or not. I don't expect to, though, as Hector knew I intended to drag race the car using their tank and there was extra baffling installed to help control fuel slosh. Keep us posted. I'm sure you'll be happy with it

Hey Ken, yes working with Hector. I mentioned your name and he raised the price a couple hun :D Actually I did mention your name and how you were impressed with how he handled the issues you had. He remembered and admitted to being human and making mistakes. He also has a twin walbro type pump setup (two separate modules) out also I guess and then the vaporworx setup too. He upgraded the sending unit to an encapsulated one that will help with gauge fluctuations and said he would add any necessary baffling needed for the application. Super nice guy to work with. The car is 95% street but I told Hector we are spraying it and occasionally racing it and I can't chance any fuel starvation issues. He said he will take care of it.........So I am leaving it up to him.
Recieved the Edelbrock Victor EFI ready intake today, hopefully the EFI kit arrives soon. Car is getting dropped of next week so I can get to port matching the intake right away anyway while waiting for the other stuff to come.
blue66 Mar 26th, 11, 12:52 PM Relay panel I built for the GTO.
Starter and fuel pump relays on the left, fed with 10gauge wires, Key on ignition power, nos, and nos purge on the right. Upgraded to a CS130 alternator, 6gauge charge wire to junction block. Feeding the panel with 6gauge cable also. Eliminating as much demand on the factory wiring as possible under the hood. The stock fuseblock will be handling the interior, lighting, and supplying the switched inputs to the relay panel only. Still waiting on a gas tank and dual sync distributor.
Hopefully they show up next week. Using a Ricks Hotrod shop stainless tank with an internal A1000 pump. Hopefully I'll get some pics of the EFI parts up this weekend too.

The Old Reliable Mar 27th, 11, 9:26 PM That'll mean no more "no electric fuel pump" in the sig. ;)
You're really going top-flight with your EFI system!
Tom Mobley Mar 28th, 11, 12:20 AM that's a nice looking piece you've built there. What is that fuse panel gizmo?

This is for a buddies car, I will still have old reliable mechanical. LOL.

Thanks, It is a 6circuit panel with a grounding bus included. I really wouldn't need to have grounded each relay like I did, but It makes for a clean install without wires spliced or mulitiple wires in a connector. I am runnning 6gauge pos. and grd. from the battery to the panel. I will be using it as a junction point for a couple other items. Otherwise there would be no need for a 6gauge cable to ground a few relays, LOL. Mounted it behind the pass side headlights on the engine side of the core support. Out of sight and weather. Then just putting another terminal strip up on the firewall behind the engine to terminate things at. That way everything can be routed cleanly and changed as needed without cutting and splicing wires.
blue66 Apr 17th, 11, 7:41 PM Got most everything installed, gotta order fuel lines yet. 90% of wiring done. Here are some pics of the components and a couple of installed pieces. Have to get some more pics now that it is all installed. These are a couple weeks old already!
Had to machine intake (thanks Shane) for port/bolt alignment, valve cover clearance and hood clearance. Then spent 1/2 a day port matching the intake. Removed stock external regulated alt, and regulator and converted to a 105amp late model CS130.

MarkP Apr 18th, 11, 12:56 AM Brian,
What distributor did you use? Did it wire up with supplied connectors?
How much did you remove from the intake at the flange?
blue66 Apr 18th, 11, 1:54 PM Carb flange .250"
Head, .060"
Dennis Moore sells an adapter to plug the Fast dist. into the holley plug. The dist had about a 3ft lead on it, plus the adapter so I just used the plug from the adapter, and shortened up the dist harness, got some terminals form GM dealer and put the matching plug on the dist. Eliminating all the extra wire and connections.
Only 4 wires from dist. Ground, key on B+, cam signal, and crank signal. So no big deal.
MarkP Apr 18th, 11, 6:43 PM Will you be able to run sequential then?
blue66 Apr 18th, 11, 7:08 PM Yes
F1 Speed Apr 18th, 11, 7:31 PM WOW!! Really clean looking install. I love your idea for the fuse panel to take the demand off the factory wiring. Who makes the main fuse block?
Doug F. Apr 18th, 11, 8:27 PM WOW!! Really clean looking install. I love your idea for the fuse panel to take the demand off the factory wiring. Who makes the main fuse block?
I would not use 1" of wire on a 30-40 year old car for wiring anything, especially with EFI. Very nice job. I wish that was the norm. :(
blue66 May 2nd, 11, 11:54 AM Got some more pics and progress. Have since finsihed up wiring, got Nitrous solenoids mounted. Ordering fuel lines today. Gotta get O2 sensor bung welded in and finish up a few small things. Tank is going back for surgery as it is hitting the tailpipes and is not set into the tank support recesses due to the clearance issue with the exhaust. The factory tank angles upward in the rear lower portion so Ricks Tanks is taking care of it. After this is finished we gotta get them wheels/tires swapped out for something different!!
