I know its not a chevelle but hotchkis put a ls1 in a 70 camaro. And LS1's came with 6 speeds.

I have looked into this also. You have to go aftermarket fuel pump of course, and also change the motor mounts and i believe reposition the cross member. I have friend who tried to convince me to do it instead of a BBC buildup, he works for a wrecker so he could get me a setup. For about the same cost though i can get my BBC running, and it will be quite a different beast.

Another word from experience now that I'm in the middle of my EFI conversion, you have to redo your fuel system. You'll need a return line, electric pump, good filter, you'll also have to either sump your tank or create a surge tank unless you want to drive around with a full tank all the time.

Wow! Missed this post. I've got an LS1 and a 4L60E in my 1967 Chevelle. I did the swap in late 1999 and have been using it as my commuter ever since. I built my motor mounts because in 1999 nobody offered them. Fuel system was pretty straight forward for an EFI car. I sent my harness out to modified, but have since done three for friends by myself. It's not hard.
Good luck.
