Hey guys, I had recently pulled my motor out of the Chevelle to do a pan swap, getting rid of the speed bump grinder. Anyway, as I left the pan drain the rest of the oil out, I wiped it clean to put it away till the first flea market. As I was cleaning it out I noticed (heard) a few pieces of metal scrapping the bottom of the pan. They turned out to be a couple of teeth from my cam sprocket. When I took the timing cover off I was shocked to see about 7 teeth missing off the front sprocket and 2 missing off the rear (double roller timing chain). My question is....what would have caused this to happen. The motor ran fine for the past 2 years. Might have hit my rev limiter once or twice (missed a shift)...but I let off quickly enough. I wouldn't think that would do it though.
Thanx
Brian

Brian,
Have a little patience .... most of us dont spend our entire lives on the internet http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Take a look at the block, right above the middle oil galley plug above the camshaft. Does it look like the chain was rubbing there ?? A lot of the newer blocks need a little grinding to keep the chain from hitting. If the chain was rubbing there, it would keep the two sprockets from being correctly aligned, and might cause the problem you had. Other than that I cannot think of anything unless the chain was way too loose. I doubt that the rev limitier had anything to do with it, most drag race cars stage at around 5000 on the limiter with no adverse effects.
Just curious, whose chain set was it ?

Thanx Bill, I think it WAS a Crane...can't remember. It's been in the motor for about 6 years. As far as the block goes...no, no rubbing and it is a 70 block...not a newer one. And yes I realize you guys are not on here ALL the time!!! I just thought that after a day i would see at least one response....plus i didn't want it (the post)to disapear.

1)back-firing? Seems like I heard of an engine that was back-firing and had this happen.....Has the engine been farting through the carb or exhaust?
2)Cam-walk? This can cause mis-allignment....Maybe?

Brian,
I once sheared the teeth off a timing chain sprocket. It was a stock unit on high rpm 427 motor and it literally disintegrated the teeth on the cam sprocket.Only Cloyes true rollers from here on out.
If it's a lower end (cheaper unit),with cast
gears that might explain it.
