i am sorry to have to ask this question again everyone..... but...
will a stock 502/502 crate engine fit under a 69 chevelle with an ss hood(not cowl induction).
i did some rough measuring... from top of the carb to the center of the motor mount bolt...
then from the top of the fender to the center of the frame mount hole.
it looks very close... in fact looking like it may not fit.
has anyone done this with a stock ss hood(not cowl induction)?
thanks again everyone.... just want to be really sure ...but since i already have the motor i guess i am commited to it!!!
i just did not want to get a new hood.!! smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

The 502 is the same hieght as any other big block. I don't see a problem. The ramjet motor probably wouldn't fit though due to the very high intake manifold. I notched the hood bracing to allow for engine movement even though the hood did shut without doing that. This is on a '70 SS car though. Just make sure to run with headers so that monster can breathe, and have fun!!!

It will fit fine with the factory intake that comes with the 502

dont be alarmed when you first drop it in. My 396 sits so high, If I hadn't had the hood on already, I would never beleive that it would fit!

Hi, I probably can answer your question. I have a 68 SS w/ a 502. Alot depends on motor mounts you use. I had a 396 w/ short & wide mounts in it @ one time & it had lots of hood clearance. Then I went to a 454 w/ tall & narrow mounts ( like car is supposed to have. That motor had a GM intake off a ZZ 502 on it. It was close to the hood. Alot depends on air cleaner used. I am now running a ZZ 502 w/ a Performer RPM Air Gap on it. Iam also running a dual snorkel air cleaner that's a little taller then one of the open element ones used by GM. I trimmed my under side of my hood a little cuz it rubbed through the chrome on my new lid. GRR! Anyhow, when it comes to putting a 502 in a chevelle I have encountered it all. If you have any more questions I think I can answer most. Also, I'm running Hedman shorty headers. Good luck, JOHN

Our stock L78 has less than half an inch clearance between the hood and breather. Close the hood very gently the first time.
