Hey guys,

I hope you can help me.
Heres the problem: When I start the engine, it blows the seal out on the oil filter and all the oil pukes out onto the floor. At first I thought it was a defective oil filter, so I bought a different brand and it did it again. I'm tring to run the engine long enough to break it in, but I can't do it with out oil. :( If you have any ideas what could be causing this...please share them. Thanks for your help. smile.gif Brian

Is it possible that the gasket from the old oil filter is sticking to the block and causeing it to leak oil?

I checked to make sure that the surface was clean before I put the new filter on. One more thing I failed to mention before, when this happens the filter also "bloats" before the seal fails. I'm beginning to think that there might be something wrong with the oil pump. Any more ideas? Thanks, Brian

Your bypass plunger in the oil pump is probably stuck. The plunger has a spring behind it and that is what regulates oil pressure. If the plunger is stuck closed, then the pump is delivering too much pressure to the engine. You DO have a good oil pressure gauge on this engine don't you??

Hi Bill,

I'm restoring this car back to original. It didn't come with an oil pressure gauge. I wish it did. :( Is there any way this by-pass plunger can be "freed" up with out pulling the engine?
Thanks, Brian

Sorry Brian,
The pan is going to have to be removed and the pump disassembled to get the plunger freed up.

I have one more question. I was talking to a friend who suggested running a quart of trans. fluid with the oil. Since trans. fluid contains a detergent, my freind thought that it might free up the bypass plunger in the oil pump. Has anybody tried this before? Thanks, Brian

Brian,
I have seen 2 engines destroyed due to the oil filter coming apart internally and the filter material endin up in the engine :( :( Dont mess with the trans fluid...pull the pan, replace the pump, and get on with it.

Brian,
Just want to add...I would highly recommend that you purchase a cheap mechanical oil pressure gauge and temporarily hook it up instead of your idiot light. That way you know exactly what is going on with the oil pressure on your new engine. $25 is cheap insurance.

Thanks so much for your replies.
I'm planning to pull the engine out next week and replace the oil pump. I have an external oil press. guage I'm going to hook up where the sender goes to check the oil press. after the oil pump is installed. Thanks again for your help.
