Just wondering what the real situation is with older vehicles. Does the DMV still require these cars to be tested and smogged? If so, what are the requirements? Thanks for any info on this!

Not that I'm aware of. I've had my 70 Malibu since the spring of 2002 and has yet to be test, inspected or smogged. Just pay for the tags and drive.

Very good. I didn't think there would be any problems, but the longer I live in this fine state, the more I realize how tricky some things can be. I'd also seen reports that older cars may eventually need to be smog tested. Glad to hear you've had no issues. Thanks for the info!

They've tried several times to require smog checks on pre-1974 vehicles. But, they're still exempt. Any vehicle over 30 years old is currently exempt. but, I think they'll set a line at 1975 (1976 will NOT be exempt in 2006).

Really? That's too bad. I'm guessing that they'll always grandfather in the vehicles that are currently exempt. At least I hope so.

Latest article I read indicates the California politicians are trying to quickly get a bill passed to require post 1975 cars to meet smog requirements. I have heard both that the Governor (Arnold) is opposed to and for this, so I am not sure which is true. I guess time will tell.

RedHot66,
Have heard nothing about what you said. For now, the smoke has cleared, and what 72Elcamino SS said is they way it is. No new laws pending to smog test the under 74 cars (except for road side inspections).. NO smog checks for 74 and under, and no smog checks for 75 next year, and thats where it ends. BUT, every car 75 and under is supposed to have all there emissions on and working. Even tho no inspections. And of course you can bet all us Californians obey the smog laws. No quotes please.

Well Hi-po you are right and I am right. I went and dug up the article in the latest Popular Hot Rodding.
The article discusses California assembly bill 2683. It brings an end to the rolling 30 year exemption. If passed, vehicles starting with the 1976 model year will need to pass a smog inspection. 1975 and earlier will always be exempt. The Bill's sponser is Sally Lieberman (D-San Jose). This Bill has moved so fast SEMA and like minded hobbyists have not had time to react.
What is really incredible, as the article describes, is even clean burning post 1975 automobiles will be subject to fines if mechanical components are upgraded to modern replacement parts.

Apparently Arnold is the only person who can veto this bill. Jay Leno indicated, in a conversation with SEMA spokesman Frank Bohanon back in August, that Arnold was opposed to the Bill back then.

BTW, I have my smog equipment in place. See that PCV valve.

Red Hot 66, Read my Lips, your reading old news. Its all over with, Arnold (I'll Be Back) signed the bill, its history. He signed it early Oct. He helped screw us. He pissed on Jay. Arnold signed the bill that requires what I explained previously. BTW, I have that same PCV valve. (for now)

One more thing that I understand is, that even though we don't need smog check 75 and older, they can do spot check on a car any time, and check for smog equipment?

even though we don't need smog check 75 and older, they can do spot check on a car any time, and check for smog equipment? Harv, you are correct. It was mentioned above but I'll rephrase it...

1966-1974 cars are NOT EXEMPT in California. They are only spared from the regular biennial inspection and ownership-transfer inspections. The older cars are still REQUIRED to have ALL the smog equipment installed and operational... A police officer or remote-sensing device CAN sent you a notice to have your car inspected if it is thought to be producing a significant amount of pollution...

I don't know anybody that has had to have theirs tested yet, but I imagine its only a matter of time...

I've questioned numerous CHP cops the last 4 months and asked them about pulling someone over to check there emission controls. Most said, they know nothing about it, a few said, they would only pull someone over with excessive smoking, and a few said they don't have time for that. Each one of these Cops where cool guys, I believe them..BUT, I think that if you were out there causing trouble with your Ride, just to get back at you they may do an inspection. At these Street racing Busts, they (CHP) called out there techs to inspect for illegal emissions
