I was wondering what other mods can you do to a 402 to get somemore hp? It has a Airgap and 750 Speed Demon..Hooker Super Comps and a really unretricted x-pipe exhaust. What is the best cam setup to go w/ and any suggestions on head work?
Thanks pat

How about the xs282s comp solid...great throughout the rpm range with that compression...easy on parts and sounds good

70,

Regardless of the year of the block, unless the block has been "0" decked and the heads cut and CC'd to about 96 or you have a much larger dome piston (something over a .180 dome which is standard for a 396-402 motor), your 402 motor probably has a real 9.5 to 9.7 CR. But that still allows you plenty of options for a cam. You will have to decide next if you want solid or hydraulic and what RPM range you want to run.

the heads and deck were machined when it was last built.... i'll prolly go solid and what rpm range do u think will be the best for the street

'70,

For what its worth, I have the exact same motor with a ported Performer 2-0 and a Crane 286 Powermax. If you want to stay hydraulic, I could recommend this cam to you. Decent power, acceptable vacuum at idle (decent lope to sound good yet not radical). So far it has propelled my '69 to 14.09 / 99.09 MPH in the 1/4. This is with a real stiff suspension and street radials and zero traction - probably equivalent to driving in the rain!

You could go bigger, but I wouldn't go much or you could go a little smaller, but I think this is a good starting point. I am also exploring a small solid street roller, but may shelve that idea completely. Whatever you do, do not get trapped into the bigger is better syndrome, especially with a 400 inch motor in a 2 ton car.

thx.... i prolly want to go solid lifters... how big should i go? and what does a lumpier can do for you vs a lighter cam? thast the one aspect of the engine thtat i havent really understood(never really tried to untill now)
