CHELKAMINO Feb 21st, 03, 1:37 AM I plugged up mine in my street/strip car.....NO PROBLEMS!!! The only thing to remember is that ALL the oil will be going through the filter (which is a good thing). But if the car is used all year round (cold enviroments especially) I wouldn't suggest plugging it. Oil pressure is very high due to the by-pass being plugged. Damage to the filter (could blow off motor) may occur if revved to high when cold.
My answer for ya's.......To each is own!!!!

BillK Feb 21st, 03, 7:27 AM Jack,
My answer is no in 99.9% of applications. I have seen two engines ruined because of oil filters coming apart internally and the filter material ending up in an oil passage http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif If it is a race engine, and the driver is willing to use a HP type filter (Moroso, Fram HP, Etc) and he knows to kep his foot out of it until the OIL temperature is up...then it can be done. Otherwise, I figure that most performance enthusiasts are going to change thier oil and filter often enough that the chances of a filter getting clogged up to the point that the bypass is needed, is pretty slim. There are ten bazillion Chevy V-8s running the roads with the filter bypasses and they do not have any problems.
Just my opinion,

Mike Feudo Feb 21st, 03, 8:17 AM Street car no. In a race only car you can do it but you must be carefull and really need to use the 2 quart truck filter.
Corey872 Feb 21st, 03, 8:44 AM I second the race/yes street/no opinions. IF you are terribly concerned, sometimes a filter MFR. will have a filter of same or larger volume, same threads, and higher bypass pressure.

Wheels68 Feb 21st, 03, 8:35 PM I have mine plugged with no problems on a street/strip car, but am running 10-30 oil. I built the engine to reccomended clearances and still have 25 psi at hot idle with this weight of oil. Also running a good quality filter. I talked to my machinist about this and he said no problem as long as you don't run heavy oil and use your head when the engine is cold.
hoffbug Feb 21st, 03, 9:40 PM All I can say is that Im damn glad my oil was 100% filtered after the cam roller tracked (it missed the heat treatment process. Rockwell test and manufacturer confirmed http://www.chevelles.com/forum/rolleyes.gif ) and sent metal particles throughout my motor.

Metalmechanic Feb 21st, 03, 10:38 PM coworker wrong, you right... the bypass valve is your friend, oil temp 190 oil 10-30 clean oil good to go... frost on the windshield, cold oil, foot to the floor so long Mr crankshaft.....
wanarace Feb 21st, 03, 11:36 PM Just run synthetic. It's almost the same viscosity at 20deg vs 200deg.

thor27 Feb 21st, 03, 11:55 PM I like pluging the bypass, (my $.02) BUT, it means NO cheap filters. I've done it for years, but did have to nurse home my daily driver truck once years ago when the FRAM filter colapsed inside and I had NO oil pressure, switched to WIX, no more probs.

You are right. The possibility of blowing a filter or causing another problem is much greater than the benefits you would receive from blocking off the bypass.

CHELKAMINO Feb 22nd, 03, 5:17 PM Like I said....to each is own!!!
I've had mine plugged up for 5 plus years now running 10/40 weight oil with NO PROBLEMS!!!! I don't drive the car in the winter, so cold start ups don't affect me.
