This is for a daily driver in a 1965 Impala.

I have a good donor 350 with 882 heads. Also have some 291 and 991small value heads. The 350 is tired and would make a good donor.

Last time I rebiuld a 350 the price of machining was high, but also needed line bore, and I thought the next time I need a motor, maybe get a Goodwrench motor or a crate new.

Is the lowest price crate motor from GM a rebuild or new. Or is 330 HP new motor the lowest.

Dart head or rebuild the 291. The speed shop has a Dart head for $549 bare. I had $330 in a pair of 991 small value heads machined last time.

I liked the 991 small value on the last motor. My tire burning days are over, but the 991 had good pull when the four barrel opened, untill about 65-70 then my fun was over.

I lost my contact to a machine shop and now I will just be a guy off the street.

Just looking for your ideas.

thank you

If this is for a driver, consider a locally rebuilt motor. Find a rebuilder with a good reputation. Stay away from the part store motors and go directly to the rebuilder. I did this for my driver in 1996 and it is still going strong with over 100,000 miles. Cost was about $900. You can normally get some upgrades for the cost difference for the parts (i.e. double roller chain for $8-10 more). Hyper pistons for maybe $100 more. Anyway, just a thought.

I installed an ATK 350, 4 bolt main, in 1996 and is still going strong with over 160,000 miles on it. Free delivery to boot and a great warranty. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

If you are a competent engine builder/mechanic, have the machine work done and put the engine together yourself. If not, order a crate engine.

The GM Goodwrench 350 listed here (http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?action=catalog_start&catid=123) for $1300. is not a bad motor for a driver. Its approx 225-250HP and has a good GM warrrantee. You can buy it thru any GM dealer.
