: Engine idle question.
rianbechtold Sep 26th, 04, 2:11 PM Right now, i have my engine idle set to high because every time i put it in gear the whole car jerks bad. Yesterday, i lowered it and pretty much eliminated the jerk but now when i put it in drive or reverse it just dies! Any suggestions? Could it be the high and low or lean and rich settings? Thanks
Greybeard Sep 26th, 04, 5:48 PM The first question, have you worked with the idle mixture?
rianbechtold Sep 26th, 04, 7:22 PM Uhh, no. How do i do that? graemlins/clonk.gif
rianbechtold Sep 27th, 04, 7:05 PM I know it's a stupid question but does anyone know the answer? Thanks
Pat Kelley Sep 27th, 04, 7:24 PM What carb do you have?
rianbechtold Sep 27th, 04, 8:19 PM You know, i got it with the car and i was wondering the same thing! It has no distinctive badges but it does have some sort of a code on one of the corners. Would that help? Thanks
BUDS1970 Sep 27th, 04, 8:36 PM Probably the first question would be is are there any vacuum leaks.Check all the basics before adjusting anything.
SWHEATON Sep 28th, 04, 9:18 AM Rainbeachtold, you need to give us a lot more info to get good advice.
What is you setup?
MOTOR
CARBTYPE(2 OR 4 BRL)
CARB MFG (Q-JET/HOLLEY/EDELBROCK)
TRANS (SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE AUTO)
STOCK OR PER CAM.
You problem is most likely to be carb, timing related (esp if long duration perf cam),or a mix of the 2 things but we need more info to help you out.

rianbechtold Sep 28th, 04, 6:29 PM Sorry bout that, i've just been so busy and frustrated lately! It is a 350 motor, 4 bblt carb (i got the carb with the carb so i don't know what the mfg is but it does have "4C4 9638S" in printed on the base, do you know what carb it is?)it has a auto th350 trans, and i believe the stock cam. Sorry again! Thanks
Pat Kelley Sep 28th, 04, 8:47 PM The number doesn't mean anything to me but it is probably a Q-Jet. Take the air cleaner off and look at the barrels. A Q-Jet has small primaries and very large secondaries. You may need to push open the air door to see the secondaries. You'll notice the difference in size immediately.
rianbechtold Sep 28th, 04, 9:49 PM No, i'm positive it isn't a q-jet because i saw one of those on Horsepower TV and i realized that it wasn't the same as mine. Mine are about the same size about a 50 cent piece.
