ddolak Feb 21st, 05, 2:16 AM Click here (http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/classifieds.cgi?db=1970&website=&language=&session_key=&search_and_display_db_button=on&results_format=long&db_id=3443&query=retrieval)
Is this an original SS 402 engine from 1970? Also is there any way to tell which HP rating it is from the numbers there? The heads that are listed with it are from 1966-1967 I think. Any ideas, and is it worth $800?
Junkyard Dawg Feb 21st, 05, 9:51 AM It's probably worth that much to the right person....hp wise I'd guess maybe 375 or better.
michael n mississippi Feb 21st, 05, 1:54 PM finding an 402 for a 70 model is just a start on the numbers search. all 1970 chevelle 402 had #3969854 or #3963512 then if you find either of these. then it gets a little more difficult. CTX =402/350 hp 4 speed. and several different combos. try this websight out great artical there. www.nofearmotorsports.com (http://www.nofearmotorsports.com) goodluck and oh yea if it has the right codes, it is worth its weight in gold
jgoggan Feb 21st, 05, 9:09 PM I'd say that is a great price on a complete 396/402. We've been looking for a few months and haven't seen anything in that range. We've been willing to offer $1200 without much question and haven't been able to get anything yet (although, we think we're close -- if we can work out some shipping details)...

70mousejob Feb 21st, 05, 10:45 PM If that doesn't pull thru, I know a guy who had a '70 coded 402. I don't know if he still has it, but I could probably put you two in touch.
Jim Mac Feb 22nd, 05, 12:31 AM I got a question, How much does a correct date coded block bring? I've got a 396 short block, JA code 272 casting on the block should be a 69 4-speed chevelle, I'm not into numbers matching, thinking about putting it in a 72 elcamino or a 71 camaro. or would I be better off swapping it to someone restoring a 69? I just want to put a big block in the car, Jim
ddolak Feb 22nd, 05, 1:05 AM whats the difference between 2 bolt and 4 bolt? I'm relatively new to this.
Let1Hang Feb 22nd, 05, 1:01 PM ddolak - Whenever an engine says that it is a 2 or 4 bolt they are referring to the number of bolts that hold the crank in place. The bolts tie down the main caps to the block itself, holding the crank along it's centerline. The more bolts that are used to tie down the crank the more power/torque you can push through the engine.
AZCamino Feb 22nd, 05, 1:17 PM The heads are 1966 oval port small closed chamber (about 98cc) used on 325HP and 360HP engines. They would cause the compression ratio to be higher on the typical 1970 402 engine. The CE code indicates the block was a service replacement. It could have been used to replace a 1965 or later 396 or 402 or it might have been purchased over the counter. If it's a 2 bolt, then it is a 325HP or 350HP (depending on camshaft installed) block.
For restoration purposes the block would be correct for 1970 Chevelles and the date code would be appropriate for cars assembled in late February or later.
Edit: Deleted sentence from above paragraph.

Big block heads are not like small block heads.
AZCamino Feb 22nd, 05, 3:43 PM Oops, I guess I was thinking of the changeover from short water pumps to long, and was thinking there were changes to heads as well (like the small blocks). I'll edit my previous statement.
michael n mississippi Feb 22nd, 05, 9:11 PM jgoggan what code engine you looking for? i have a friend that has. 1970 402/350 hp /turbo 400 coded block
jgoggan Feb 28th, 05, 8:02 PM Thanks, but I think I have made a deal with the previous person. He's supposed to get back with me this week to finalize shipping and such, but we already have a verbal/gentlemen's agreement that I hope we'll both stick to.
If something should go wrong, I'll let you know. Thanks!
