: Re-ring needed or not?

Hi all, I have a question about my 427 that I will be pulling out of the engine bay because the oil pump pickup fell off of the pump the other day while driving

I did catch it early enough before the engine sustained any damage (that I know of).

My question is, the engine has only about 12,000 miles on it and while I have the thing out, I am going to replace the bearings, and put a new pump in  (not sure what kind, but welded this time) and possibly thinking about installing new rings while I am at it. My concern is should I bother to do this, or should I just go ahead and do it. And if I do, can I or should I try honing this at home on a hand held drill with a 3 stone or a ball type hone for moly coated rings?

Just looking for advise, I could use another point of view on this because I am feeling I should replace them now while I am at it smile.gif

Once it's pulled, and you remove a main and rod cap or two, then write us back. The bearings will tell the tale of "catch it in time".

The cylinders are primarily lubed by splash, and the oil held in the oil ring. Unless you drove it a long way before noticing the pressure loss, I'd fathom a guess the cylinders and rings are OK.

Check them from the bottom when you get the pan off - with only 12K on it, the crosshatch should still look new, and no vertical scrapes.

Thanks John,

I will post back about what I find, and with pic's if needed. I did drive the car for roughly 2 miles at below 2000 rpm before I did get smart and shut her down. No running hot or bad signs of running low oil pressure (solid cam) but I agree inspecting the bearings and cylinder walls will tell me what I need to do.

I just figured if there was no damage to the cylinder walls at all and still see a healthy crosshatch should I just leave the pistons in the bores and just do the bearings/pump that's all.

Also, I know this has been beat to death but should I buy a HV or a standard oil pump smile.gif HV in in the engine now.

lack of oil presure = crank failure high heat = piston, ring, cylinder failure for the rings- cylinders to be lacking enough oil to warrent repair would mean the crank was gone. if your crank looks good and bearings look half decent your good to go, before removing any rod bearings roll the engine and check the cylinder walls from the bottom, heads on look for scratches..... let us know what you find.

Thank you, and I will let you know on Monday.

I do have a digital camera so if something is questionable (and computer cooperates) I will post pic's of what I find smile.gif Believe me, I am hoping for the best smile.gif

Thanks again
